Shell Development Company EMERYVILLE. CALIFORNIA January 20, 1953 AIR MAIL PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT TELEPHONE OLYMPIC 2-2100 SHELL CHEMICAL CCRPCRATION 50 West 50th Street New York 20, New York Attention: Mr. F. 5. Swackhamer Gentlemen: EPON ADHESIVE VARIABLES In accordance with Mr. Walb'a request to Dr. Elam by telephone on January 8, we hereby submit the following data taken from our research records on adhesives: 1) Effect of Allyl Glycidyl Ether Concentration in Adhesive VIII: PHR of Allyl Glycidyl Ether Tensile Shear Strength at 180*F 2 (standard formula) 4 6 8 10 -- --- -- 1i. 3488 2620 1930 1342 728 ...... --, When graphically plotted these strengths are a straight line function of allyl glycidyl ether concentration. 2) Effect of Various Fillers: Since we have not evaluated various fillers in Adhesive VIII, we shall present the following values for various fillers formulated in Adhesive VII base which consists of: 100 parts (w) EPON 828 10 parts EPON 1009 12 parts Paraplex G60 It would seem reasonable to assume that these fillers would act similarly in Adhesive VIII base. These are explanatory experiments made in LAM 029187 ABS-018395 Shell Chemical Corporation -2- January 20, 1953 searching for a filler that would specifically impart high strength, especially at elevated temperature. There are apparent inconsistencies in the results that have not been resolved, and intercomparisons between the various sets of data, which were obtained at different times, are probably not very reliable. You will note that while considerable differences were observed, no one filler was found that consistently gave the outstandingly high strength we were seeking. The more promising fillers suffer the disadvantage (for aircraft applications) of being very heavy. a) The following are data using similar concentrations of fillers: Filler No filler Zinc oxide Titanium dioxide Mercuric oxide Calcium oxide Nickelous oxide Nickelic oxide Lead oxide Manganese dioxide Cupric oxide Silver oxide Stannic oxide Ferric oxide Alumina Bentone No. 34 Glass Floe Hi-Sil Mica Magnesol Solka-floc Acetylene Black Santocel Asbestos 7TF (as in Adhesive VII formula) Amount of Filler Per 100 Grams of Adhesive VII Base 37.5 37.5 37.5 37.5 37.5 37.5 37.5 37.5 37.5 37.5 37.5 37.5 37.5 37.5 25 20 37.5 37.5 20 25 5 18.5 Tensile Shear Strength at R.T. 180F (Average of 3 samples) 3180 2113 2720 2790 3020 2193 2953 3300 3010 3037 460 2590 2953 3167 2377 2970 2620 1443 663 2487 2057 2517 3060 (Average of 3 samples) 2135 3420 3200 2830 3057 1610 3107 3493 3220 3223 -- 3123 3517 3203 2303 2633 3747 1003 2737 2223 2343 3113 3067 b) The following are data using various concentrations of filler in an attempt to incorporate the maximum amount and still have an adhesive of desirable consistency: LAM 029188 ABS-018396 Shell Chemical Corporation -3- January 20, 1953 Filler No filler Zinc oxide Titanium dioxide Calcium oxide Nickelic oxide Lead oxide Manganese dioxide Cupric oxide Stannic oxide Ferric oxide Alumina Glass Floe Hi-Sil Solka-floc Santocel Asbestos 7TF (standard VII formula) Nylon floe (NYL-60) Nylon floe (N-706) Lufkin Husk-Fill Amount of Filler Per 100 Grams of Adhesive VII Base -. 100 133.3 87 20 217 283.3 313.3 106.7 100 70 30 16.7 6.6 6.6 25.3 20 20 50 Tensile Shear Strength at R.T. 180 F (Average of 3 samples) 2713 2397 2467 2833 2370 2473 2610 2533 2507 2793 2833 3187 3483 2513 2243 3330 (Average of 3 samples) 1353 2660 3080 2680 3053 3413 2807 1920 2817 3480 3250 1840 3077 1820 1823 2797 3287 3163 2887 2007 2093 2013 c) The following data pinpoint some of the best fillers found for Adhesive VII: Filler Titanium dioxide Nickelic oxide Amount of Filler Per 100 Grams of Adhesive VII Base 166.7 150 100 66.7 233.3 216.7 166.7 90 Tensile Shear Strength at -70 R.T. 180 F 1493 1700 2083 2333 2223 1803 2120 2020 1547 1857 2040 2727 1797 1927 2053 2020 2067 2683 2523 1760 2620 2330 2437 2670 LAM 029189 ABS-018397 Shell Chemical Corporation -4- January 20, 1953 Filler Lead oxide Ferric oxide Alumina Hi-Sil Amount of Filler Per 100 Grams of Adhesive VII Base 250 233.3 183.3 150 133.3 108.9 83.3 66.7 103.3 86.7 53.3 36.7 23.3 20 13.3 10 Tensile Shear Strength at -70 R.T. 180 F 1813 2217 2157 2527 2203 1937 2543 2387 2050 2060 2463 2020 2287 2370 2540 2210 2093 2203 2390 2720 2460 3057 2630 2880 1923 2433 2700 3073 3220 3313 2893 2907 2930 3773 3153 2763 3683 3203 2900 2763 2490 2817 2677 2157 2237 1817 1657 1777 Very truly yours.
