Technical papers in th is area have not based observations on the OSHA standard's S hour time weighted average for fib ers greater than 5 microns in length. Most papers have emphasized peak concentrations (as blowing brake lin in g dust from a used brake awaiting reline) and ths fib e r s shorter than 5 microns in length. Based on discussions at the Aebustos Information Association nesting in September, e ffic ie n t vacuum cleaning systems should be o f help not only in the factory but in the brake service area. I have, therefore, enclosed sales litera tu re from two manufacturers, along with the NIQSH (National In stitu te of Occupational Safety and Health) recommended procedures for asbestos brake and clutch servicing. Before distributing th is information, I reviewed th is data with Mr. I. H. Heaver, acting Chairman of our Asbestos Study Committee, to be sure th is information was worthwhile. A fte r vacuum c le a n in g , any rem aining dust s h a l l be removed u sin g a rag soaked in water and wrung u n t il n e a rly c r y . Under no circum stances s h a ll compressed s i r or dry brushing be usee for. c le a n in g . 4 . During a rc in g and r iv e t in g o p era tio n s, an approved r e s p ir a to r , as d escrib ed in (2) above, s h a ll be worn. (Grinding ( a r c in g ) machines s h a ll be provided with lo c a l exhaust v e n tila tio n such chat worker exposures a re m aintained a t le a s t below the 1976 OSKA asbestos standard (29 CFR 1910.1001).* At a minimum, the d u st-b ag o f the an tin g machine s h a ll be removed and rep laced w ith the h o se o f the h ig h e f f ic ie n c y in d u s t r ia l vacuum d escrib ed ia (3) above. 5.
