For Action: ERP Candidate Recruitment Importance: High BHRC Technical Committee (TC) - Dr. Jerry Rice has successfully identified two US-based candidate bioethicists (process elaborated below), who are willing to join the Ethics Review Panel. I have spoken with both candidates and have confirmed their interest and availability; they have, however, requested significantly different billing rates as noted below. The goal of adding a fourth bioethicist to the Ethics Panel was to ensure that critical mass would be maintained, should another member resign. Dr. Lombardo's requested billing rate, however, is treble that of other US-based BHRC expert consultants. Given these considerations, please: 1) Confirm that I may proceed in contracting with Dr. Ellen Clayton to join the ERP, and 2) Advise if the TC wishes to proceed with recruitment of Dr. Paul Lombardo, either: -- by agreeing to his terms, or -- by stating that the BHRC has an established rate for US-based consultants (and leave the decision to him). *********************************************** Ellen Wright Clayton, M.D., J.D. I have done this in three stages: (1) I assessed the potential availability of each candidate according to his/her current affiliation; (2) I performed a literature search (PubMed) to assess the particular areas of bioethical concern that are of special interest to each candidate, as indicated by his/her scholarly publications; and (3) I telephoned Dr Brody to discuss all the candidates with him and to obtain his assessment of the suitability of each individual on the basis of his personal acquaintance. On the basis of availability, I have tentatively eliminated those nominees who are currently employed by an agency of the United States Government, as it is unlikely that any of these highly qualified individuals could obtain the necessary official permission to become paid consultants to the API to participate in this activity.
