SUBJECT* Duet Survey - Jersey City
Centloraeni
TTe are attaohlng for your information a oopy of Dr* Gardner's re port, giving the results of his duet survey at Joreoy City, and
also a report in oonneotion with the (examination of the X-rays of about 200 men at the Jersey City plant.
It appears that we have a very hazardous dust oondltlon at Jersey City, and also have a problem with a number of mon who now have asbesteals and tuboroulosis*
Vo arc talcing the neoessary stops to provide dust oolleotlng and
ventilating equipment, and in the meantlmo will provide respirators
to minimize the dust hazard,
*
Tito roul problem we iievo for consideration is that of deolding what to do about tho men who now have on oooupatlonal disease. If some of those men who have esbestosis should make olaim against the oompany and reooivo an award, would tho United States Qypsum Company have to stand the entire oxpense or oould part of it be prorated to
the formor ownors of the Jersey City plant?
I urn attaohlng a oopy of my letter of A'*;.uct 13th to V.r Ready, sum arizing soun of tho more Important points in tho report* Tie roulito, of course, that tho management of our oompuny muat make the find deoislon as to v.hat aollon wo shall take on notifying the mon who have been oxiuained and who hi.-'o been found to have asbestosis, tuboroulosis, or sumo othor#disease, V.o shall also have to oome to
some dool6ion in connootion with tho oontinuivtlon of tho employment of our mon who have an oooupatlonal or other diabase, but wo would upproolate your advloe in this oonnootion sinoo you will, of oourso,
have in mind tho legal consideration.
