f \ PX/</^ /} .COMHBEFIT.! SUBJECT TO PROTECTIVE ORDER. MONSANTO BIOHAZARDS COMMITTEE Minutes of a Meeting October 27, 1981 8363014 Dr. Gaffey then reported a number of cases of soft tissue sar comas in Monsanto employees exposed to trichlorophenol (TCP), 2,4,5trichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4,5-T) or dioxins. There were two tumors, one a malignant fibrous histiocytoma, and the other a general liposarcoma in workers in Nitro, Virginia who had been exposed to TCP and 2,4,5-T and had chloracne. The third case from Nitro was a neurosarcoma without chloracne in whom exposure to dioxins was not established. At Krummrich, in East St. Louis, where pentachlorophenol was made, there were two cases of fibrosarcoma and liposarcoma and three lymphoid tumors. The Committee felt these cases, together with those reported by Dr. Munn in Europe (see minutes of 9/30/81) are suspicious. There are other reports in the literature suggesting that this class of chlorinated phonoLs can be carcinogenic for lumphoraas and soft tissue sarcomas (llardcll (Lancet i, 55-56, 1979) Honchar and Halperin (Lancet i, 260-269, 1981) and Olsson and Brandt "(Lancet ii, 579, 1981) . A question was raised as to whether multiple myeloma of which there are four cases in the Krummrich plant could be related to these soft tissues sarcoma and lymphomas. The Committee felt this relationship bears careful watching. .
