Kehoe Professor Emeritus of Occupat ional Medicine Depart ment of Environment al Healt h Ket t ering Laborat ory, College of Medicine Eden and Bet hesda Aves. Cincinnat i, Ohio 45219 Dear Dr. Kehoe: Many t hanks for your letter of Jul y 21, 1969. 1 am cert ainly in agreement wit h the point s brought out in your letter. I am writ ing at t his time because my t hought s have changed a lit t le bit since my last letter to you wit h respect t o t he det erminat ion of lead in blood on capil l ary samples of blood. Alt hough obt aining a capillary sample by finger prick maybe quit e appealing from t he public relat ions point of view, it may indeed int roduce a signif icant variable from t he analyt ic point of view. Thus t he hemat ocrit on t he capillary sample may vary signif icant ly from t he hemat ocrit of a venous sample, which could int ro duce a signif icant variable wit h reference to lead. For t his reason, we hope to t ry small venous samples and will, in t he course of t he st udy we are undert aking, det ermine how easy it is for the usual house of f icer t o obt ain one to t hree ml of blood by venapuncf ure from very small children. I shall let you know how t his progresses. It would not change the analyt ical procedure and might improve t he reliabilit y. I hope you will keep me informed, as we would be glad to t ry any promising analyt ic t echnique in the st udy we are undert aking during t he next 12 months. 1 may add t hat the emphasis in this st udy is on the reliabil it y of analyt ical and sampling procedures rather than on the incidence aspect of t he problem. I do plan to be at the APHA meet ing in Philadelphia in November, and hope possibly t o have a chance to meet you then. Yours sincerely, JJCr o. v / /Julian Chisolm, Jr . , M. D. 002025 N20665
