Quarles Subject: Medical Restrictions - M. Paputa Peck "f As you requested, an industrial hygiene evaluation was made of the work area of salaried employee M. Paputa Peck on January 18, 1983. Ms. Peck is an analytical chemist operating gas chromatographs in the Chemical Analysis Research Laboratory at the Glendale facility. Ms. Peck recently had an ovarian growth removed, and the Company has been requested by her physician to assure Ms. Peck avoids exposure to carcinogens, mutagenB, and teratogens. The laboratory is equipped to handle carcinogens and other toxic chemicals. Local exhauBt and general ventilation in the laboratory is adequate, and storage and handling procedures for chemicals appear exemplary. Ve believe that if the following actions are taken, Ms. Peck's physician1b request will be satisfied: ' o An inventory of the laboratory to determine how many carcinogens are present. Attached is the latest complete list of chemical carcinogens. o Ms. Peck should avoid any contact with the listed carcinogens. Contact is defined as: - Preparation of primary standards from neat materials. - Direct contact with neat materials during housekeeping or cataloging tasks. o If contact with carcinogens cannot be avoided, the materials should be handled in exhaust-ventilated laboratory hoods with appropriate skin protection. Further, within this laboratory setting, the handling of trace quantities of carcinogens necessary for routine operation of gas chromatographs should not present a significant hazard to Ms. Peck. jb Attachment H.
