Authentic records established in the A.P.I. tenyear pipe coating test* andon thousands of miles of op erating lines have furnished conclusive evidence of the ef fectiveness of this coating. Somastic pipe coating is a special mixture of asphalt mix mastic compounded to rigid specifications and firmly bonded to the pipe as a thick seamless coating. Overlapping field joints of the same mixture make this protection continuous along the pipe line. With its. central plant located in an area of pipe line concentration and equipped to cozt pipe ranging in diameter from Yi" to 26", BCo's Watson Somastic pipe coating yard also maintains a reconditioning plant for used pipe as well as a wrapping opera tion for pipe that does not require Somastic pipe coating treatment. In the field, rail head plants can be set up near the line to be coatedr'or Somastic pipe coating may be ap plied over the trench by mobile equipment. ' The big job of turning out "the answer to the soil corrosion problem" is in the hands of Somastic Division Manager Jasper S. (Jap) Connell and his hard working crew of super tective coating including prevention of elec trolysis to deterioration from chemical or bacterial action as well as mechanical relief from distortion, mechanical shock from han dling and stock piling and maintenance of ductility to withstand field bending or move ment, the Somastic Division can claim among its satisfied users large pipe line operators, oil companies, gas and water and public utilities companies. Somastic is manufactured and applied in the 11 western states and on foreign locations by Bechtel Corporation, and in the states east of the Rocky Mountains by H. C.
