Dear Secretary Wallace: We have received comments from several people close to the consumer movement who fear that your announced policy of transferring the divisions of Simplified Trade Practices and Commercial Standards out of the Bureau of Standards will act to the detriment of consumers# They feel that this policy is the initial step which will even tually put standardization control into the hands of pri vate industry resulting in a dearth of factual information to the consumer# Although agreed that the Bureau of Standards has not done a widespread job on establishing standards of con sumer goods, consumer leaders, who remember you as the champion of the old Tugwell bill, are puzzled that you con curred in handing over this work to an outside agency. They had hoped with you as Secretary, the governments bur eau would have been expanded# They also assert that the American Standards Association, which was recommended by Mr. Milson to take over the functions of the Bureau Qf standards, has so far done nothing of a constructive nature since its reorgani zation in Iferch.
