"STANSHII* H O U STO N " October 9, 1972 Circular Letter 0-6 1-3-5 P Asbestos Insulation M-78-09 TO MASTERS AND CHIEF ENGINEERS OF HUMBLE OPERATED OCEAN VESSELS AND ENCO SUNSHINE STATE Dear Sir: Effective immediately, discontinue the application of insulating materials containing asbestos. In the future use "Super Caltemp" which is asbestosfree calcium silicate inhibited to prevent stress corrosion cracking of stainless steel. Super Caltemp comes in pipe covering forms, blocks, pre-formed elbows, and cement. It is suitable for temperatures up to 1200F. Present supplies of asbestos insulating materials should be packed in cardboard boxes, sealed closed, and marked "Asbestos Not To Be Used On This Vessel - Do Not Open Unless A Dust Mask Is Worn". Persons packing the cartons should wear dust masks. We will advise at a later date the disposition of the boxes of asbestos. The use of asbestos insulation is being discontinued because the Occupa tional Safety and Health Standards (CFR 1910.93) indicates that under certain circumstances, it can be a health hazard. Please get in touch with this office if you have any questions on this matter. ' TJMcT:er A. Fellows F. Winzer B. Crawford J. Gordon K. Waldorf L. Hughes R. Caldwell Dr . J. G. Lione T. J.
