The typical drinking fountain as you probably noticed sits in the departmental area, commonly close to areas of operation. None of the fountains has an angled spout. Some have an arc of metal to keep one's mouth from the outlet (ironclad and Hand Pasting - east end samples). Some have rounded outlet directed up with no covering (Hand Pasting - west end sample) . These several samples are submitted under separate cover. The samples were spouted directly in the bottles and taken about 3 P.M. on 12-2-48. The rubber caps were removed momentarily before taking the samples and replaced directly. As you know, milk in bottles are kept in ice containers in the depart mental areas. The milk is known to be drunk in the same area without any cleaning of the bottles or hands. The water and milk usage is long standing and will be a hard nut to crack Your help to my answering several questions would be appreciated beyond egression. If the water is contaminated, is the hazard great enough to insist that the fountains be placed out of the department? As the milk can not be other than contaminated, is the good done by this calcium intake established and sufficient to warrant continuation of the present availability and manner of the use of milk? I appreciate that milk intake is a time honored commandment among lead workers. Making it less easily available probably will precipitate a demand for "milk time" in addition to "bath time" and "respirator allow ance" now established.
