Solon, Jr. Johns-Manville Corporation SUBJECT: Estimates for Asbestos-Health Library' and Literature Search Although the nucleus of a reference library has been assembled, it is proposed that this activity be formalized, further developed and organized along the following lines. 1. A catalogue will be developed and maintained by broad subject for quick reference and retrieval; i.e., asbestosis, asbestos and cancer, meso thelioma, asbestos bodies, etc. Categories will not be maintained needlessly; the purpose is simplicity and usefulness. This is a new activity and will require more time at the beginning to catalogue existing papers than will be needed to keep the catalogue current as new papers come in. 2. Approximately Uo basic medical and scientific journals will be screened regularly by Hill and Knowlton, Inc* for relevant articles to be added to the library and catalogue. 3. Existing references are filed by author with cross-references in the case of multiple authors. Important previously published papers, not presently on file, will be obtained and included In the library and catalogue. 4. In addition, the checking service of the Philadelphia College of Physicians will be retained for providing references from about 2,000 English and foreign language medical journals for three subjects at a cost of $25 per year per subject. Subjects: Asbestos, Mesothelioma, Glass Fiber (including glass wool and flberglas). Titles of references are reported each week on individual cards at an additional cost of 50 cents per reference. On receipt of the titles, com plete papers, if not otherwise available, may be ordered at a cost of 25 cents perxage. Translations from 19 foreign languages are also avail able, If desired, at costs per 100 words varying from $1.50 (German) to $3*25 (Japanese). The basic cost of the Philadelphia library service is estimated at about $100 per month, depending upon the number of references cited and number of full papers ordered.
