However. past studies have led im to believe that the nslx-slus Hls*r wax lis-ked Inin nther material* in the lining anil that a ehange due to the high heal nf frietion tisik place during hraking nr clutch application. Htudic* conducted by the ML Mlnai School of Medicine in New York City indiratc that brake dual may actually contain an average of 3 to $ percent aalwstn* with mine teat* ahowing concentration* ax high a* 15 percent. Sam|de* of air were taken under actual working condition* in a taxi-fleet garage and a N.Y. DcpL of Sanitation truck repairshop. Themaamplca were analyzed by electron microscopy and

TTic work of the researchers at ML Sinai was discussed at a meeting of the Nnllnnal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) where the results of physical examination* given to 90 men who had been working aa automobile and truckbrake repairmen for a period nf 10 years were examined. Of this small group the doctor* stated that X-ray examinations showed that over onequarter had signs nf abnormalities consistent with aslamlnsis disease; the same testa revealed that one quarter had also restricted pulmnnary (lung) func tions. This evidence prompted NIOSH to issue an alert to the automobile re|tair industry Indicating that while the full rxtuot of asla-stisi-rclalcii disease in hrake-servicc personnel is hot known hecause thia occupational group has not been systematically studied up to now, enough scientific data has been accumulated to point out the need to start imme diate control measure* so that the health hazard of aslieslos can be minimized.
There la no doubt that a health hazard oxiita and that exposure to asbestos fibers can increase the risk

of developing four diseases: asbcslasis-a non-maligmiU warring lung condition; cancer of the lung; ranrrr of the digestive tract and mesolhvlioma-a rancor of the lining of the cheat nr alsinminal cavities.
There are anme authorities and other studies that place the percentage of aabcatoa in brake dual at a much lower level than th<e reported by the ML Sinai croup and disagree with its Undines. AH authorities aerve that no matter how small the concentration of axls-stiis in brake and dutch dust, there is an immediate need to initiate walk practice* in every shop that will eliminate any riak to the health of mechanics.
The dancer is associated with dritlinc. grinding ami euttinc "f brake linincs. The dust generated durinc these o|terations must In- collected in a vwuum-recovery system that has a high-clRciency Alter. Many older crindera either have no recovery system or are cquipiied with vacuums that allow tiny particles of bsIh,sIos AInt to.Ik* blown into the air. Buying pre-ground shoes will minimiac the need for frindinc.
Where possible, a separate area should be set uide for hrakc and clutch work and a sign posted at the entrance that reads:
ASBESTOS DUST HAZARD. AVOID BREATHING DUST. WEAR ASSIGNED PROTECTIVE
EQUIPMENT. DO NOT REMAIN IN AREA
UNLESS YOUR WORK REQUIRES IT.
BREATHING ASBESTOS DUST MAY BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH.
Dust should never be removed from a brake or dutch assembly with an air Mmrgun or by lirushing. The only wuy t safely dean dust containing asls-stos is with an industrial-type varuum with a high efficiency' filterinc system (Fig. 1). Don't use one of your wife's old vacuum dcancre because it probably will do more harm than good. The fine particle* of axis-stmt will |nss through most varuum cleaner* and you will end up with a higher concen tration of aslwstos than you would have if you hadn't used the varuum at all. The vacuum you huy should have a 99-pcrecnt efficiency foe 0.3 micrometeri diameter aensuds. If there is any remaining dust that was not removed by vacuuming, wash it off using a slightly damp rag. Under no circumstance* should you use an air gun or dry brush (Fig. 2k
76
There is m> |*iint hn lo-iwg enreful almut vacuuming the dust if. when you empty the vacuum cleaner bag. the dust blows all around you and the shop. Brake and dutch dust should lie disposed of in a special plastic bag marked as follows:
CAUTION: CONTAINS ASBESTOS FIBERS.
AVOID BREATHING DUST. BREATHING ASBESTOS DU8T
MAY CAUSE SERIOUS BODILY HARM.
Even using a high-efficiency Industrial vacuum dcaner will not prevent a small amount of dust from reaching some nose* ami mouth* which will inhale it. To iirevenl this, you should wear an air*|Hirif, ving respirator of cither the throwaway type1 like those used in laxly *h<i|t* nr one with a replaceable particu late Alter. Before you buy either ty|ic, be sure that It is approved by NIOSH or the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration. Wear the respirator while you are oj>eraling a grinder, drill or when emptying the dust collection bagi on your vacuum
deancr.
Thera la bound to be some breke and dutch dust (hat falls to the ffaor while you arc working, so be sure to use an industrial varuum cleaner to pick it up. Don't sweep thi* part of the shop with a broom. A broom ha* the tendency to flick the asbestoa particles up into the air and that is where they are dangerous. The rest is common sense: If your shop has heavy accumulations of dust on lockers, parts shelves, overhead door channels. Imams and on window sills there is a good chance that dust contains some aslicstos. Wear your respirator and use your vacuum dcaner to go over all those hidden places carefully ami dean up the dust. Change your work chithes regularly and don't bring them home. Have them washed by an industrial laundry. Wash your hands thoroughly before eating and avoid eating in the area where you do hrakc and dutch work.
Every shop, large or small. Is responsible for meeting the nsiuiremrnt* of the federal Isw which calls for Industrial hygiene ins|s-elinns rarried out by 08HA representatives. Under thi* law the level of asbestoa shall not exceed 2 Alter* longer than 5 micrometers per cubic centimeter of air. (For a list of these Arms semi a self-addressed slamtwd post card in an envehtpe to: Asliestoa, MOTOR, 1790 Broadway, New York, NY 10019.)
Research has determined that smoking increases the rate of lung cancer among people exposed to aslieslo* du*L In short. If you have been working around tmkes and dutches for several years, it would be wise to give up smoking.

the rlinic will lie favorably Impressed and may
tm-ome customers in the future. A clinic of thi* type
invariably uncover* the need for much service work,
and the dealer should get a substantial share of this
work.
Thr heat promotion won't be effective unless
the service department ran deliver what it prnmism.
Among the moat frequent customer complaints arc
work not done when promised, cars not repaired
property and high cost of repairs. Most dealership*
will make good on a Job If the work I* performed
improperly nr a port I* defective. Theae "warran
ties" are usually Informal In nature, but some
dealer* have plans that are apcdlk and widely
advertised.
Your shop equipment can also be an important
merchandising tool An optical wheel-alignment
machine, for example, projects a "picture" of the
fnmt-end setup of a customer'* car. Few owner*
understand the |iallcm of an oadlloacope, but mnat
are* impressed by the dealer'* willingness to Invest in
such wqihisticaled equipment and train his techni
cians in its operation.
Finally, never forget that your beat merchan
diser* are your shop personnel They need not be
high-presauro salesmen. If they Impress the
customer with their courtesy, knowledge and sincer
ity and back up that Impression with their perform
ance, your Investment in modarn equipment and
promotional plana will pay off.
