ACTIVATED SLUDGE RESPIRATION INHIBITION TEST
TEST SUBSTANCE___________________________
Identity: A mixture containing perfluorooctanesulfonate, which may also be referred to as PFOS, FC-95, or as a component of FC -3041. (1Octanesulfonic acid) (CAS # 2795-39-3).
Rem arks: The 3M production lot number was 2300. The test sample is FC3041 (cc 809-1). Current information indicates it is a mixture of 6% PFOS, 36% diethylene glycol butyl ether, 36.05% water, 12% Sultone foamer, 9% sodium octyl sulfate, 0.55% sodium lauryl sulfate, and 0.4% tolyltriazole.
The following summary applies to a mixture with incompletely characterized concentrations o f impurities. Data-may not accurately reflect the toxicity o f the fluorochemical component o f the test sample.
M E T H O D _________________________________________________________
Method: Acute Toxicity of a Compound to Activated Sludge Mixed Liquor, inhouse method Test type: Static acute GLP: No Y ear Com pleted: 1981 A nalytical m onitoring: Dissolved oxygen concentration Statistical m ethods: Results were determined by calculation of the change in dissolved oxygen concentration and graphic interpretation. Test organism source: Mixed liquor from the Minneapolis - St. Paul Metro Sewage Plant, St. Paul, MN.
Test condition: D ilution w ater: Deionized water Inoculation: Not given. Reference and te s t solution preparation: A 6000 mg/L primary stock solution was prepared by diluting 0.6 g of test substance with 100 mL dilution water. Test vessels: Not given Num ber o f concentrations: 1 plus blank. Tem perature: Not given. Total suspended so lids and pH on day o f testing: Not given. Elem ent Basis: Change in dissolved oxygen concentration compared to the blank.
RESULTS___________________________________________________
Nom inal concentrations: Blank control and 1000 mg/L. Elem ent values: No inhibition of activated sludge respiration rate at 1000 mg/L with a contact time of ~5.5 minutes.

Element values based on nominal concentration. Rem arks: Testing was conducted on a mixture as described in the Test Substance Remarks field. The values reported apply to that mixture and not the fluorochemical proportion alone. C O N C L U S IO N S __________________________________________________ The test material exhibited no inhibitory effect at 1000 mg/L over ~5.5 minute exposure. Subm itter: 3M Company, Environmental Laboratory, P.O. Box 33331, St. Paul, Minnesota, 55133 DATA QUALITY_____________________________ _____________________ Reliability: Klimisch ranking 3. The study lacks description and records of the method followed. The inoculum is not properly characterized. There is no characterization of the test substance purity, and the study lacks analytical confirmation of the amount of fluorochemical proportion in the solution. The testing was conducted on a mixture of chemicals having varying degrees of biodegradability, leading to potential misinterpretation of the results. R E F E R E N C E S ___________________________________________________ The studies were conducted by the 3M Company, Environmental Laboratory, Lab Request number 6508S, 1981.
