Results of analysis of ten industrial taping, spackling and joint ing compounds.
Ten samples, collected from drywall construction sites were analy zed by x-ray diffraction, optical and electron microscopy. The smples were designated and described as follows;
1. USG-A Tape-joint topping compound (for finishing and second coat). U.S. Gypsum Co., Chicago, Illinois 60606
2. USG-B Jointing and taping compound (for rough work) . U.S. Gypsum Co.
3. USG-C Nuvobond 90 (quick drying taping compound), U.S. Gyp sum Co.
4. USG-D Jointing compound (for'topping and finishing coat). Gypsum Co.
5. USG-E Redimix jointing compound. U.S. Gypsum Co. 6. USG-F Wall board seal. U.S. Gypsum Co. 7. USG-G Drywall taping compound. U.S. Gypsum Co. 8. Spackle A - Manufacturer - Muralo Co., Bayonne, New Jersey. 9. Spackle B - Manufacturer unknown - no brand name. 10. Spackle C - Manufacturer unknown - no brand name. The results of the analyses are presented in Table II. Major com ponents are in capital letters. Substances present in lesser quanti ties are shown in small case letters. Chrysotile asbestos is present in nine of the ten samples, ranging from 5 to 12%, by weight. Tremolite asbestos was found in one sample. Quartz a major constituent in four samples.
