Comments on Statistics - R. T. Hammann There were no recordable injuries in July; however, there was a record able injury in August when a pipefitter received a laceration requiring five stitches when struck on a cheek by a backup wrench while using an impact wrench. NON-MONSANTO SAFETY - B. C. Lancaster A. Contractor Safety There were no injuries in the maintenance supplement force and only two minor injuries (particles in eye) with the Capital Projects workforce in July. However, the number of injuries has picked up considerably since the start of the AN-5 shutdown. B. CEP Safety There were four minor injuries in July. III. REPORT OF THE SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAC) - G. T. Ryan A. Ownership of Ex-Battery Limits Pipeline and Systems A policy statement was issued by SAC concerning this. This state ment will be expanded to include idle lines left in pipe racks. SHAC will check with Manufacturing superintendents for concurrence with this policy and report back to PMSB. B. Policy of Rattling Exchangers The policy will be to discontinue any use of plant air for this procedure. Information concerning this will be disseminated by (1) issuance of a SHAC Alert, (2) inclu sion in procedure bulletin, and (3) communication to all operating personnel via safety meetings. IV. REPORT OF THE PLANT SAFETY AND HOUSEKEEPING ACTION COMMITTEE (SHAC) E. P. Bailey A. Hourly Safety Committee Meeting 1. New chairman of the Hourly Safety Committee is Donald Jordan. 2. Suggestions were given as to why the plant the plant has a good safety record so far this year. Note: Responses to this question which were received by the General Superintendents will be turned over to SHAC for compila tion. B. Annual Safety and Housekeeping Inspection Recommend that we stay with the scheduled inspection dates of September 19-21. A tentative schedule has been issued. The 3rd Quarter Safety & Housekeeping Inspection will be conducted from August 6-17 to help prepare for this inspection. C. SHAC Recommendation on West Plant Air Header Contamination SHAC is working on potential solutions for simplifying use of emergency equipment. Expect to have recommendations prior to the December PMSB meeting. V. MISCELLANEOUS A. Comments from Dorothy Howard's Visit to Muscatine Plant for Safety & Housekeeping Inspection 1. Safety Information Boards Each unit at the Muscatine plant has a safety information board prominently displayed showing the safety record for that unit. Some of units in our plant also have this. This will be implemented in all units of the plant. 2. Off-the-Job Safety They are currently involved in an extensive program concerning off-the-job safety. A notebook has been given to each family for use in storing off-the-job safety items. Mail outs are sent quarterly concerning various subjects. Bob Hammann will check with Muscatine in order to get a copy and more information on their program. 3. Mud Rooms Attached to Control Rooms Each control room has a mud room which is sort of an anteroom to the control room where raingear, boots, etc. can be stored to keep from tracking materials into the control room. 4. ECA/EMT Training At least one person per shift for each unit is trained in an ECA orientee. Texas City had an extensive training program three to four years ago. We now need to update it and provide additional training. 5. Fire Extinguisher Inspection Tags Plastic laminated tags were attached to the fire exting uisher and are punched each week when the operator makes his inspection round. SHAC will look into the possibility of obtaining similar tags for use in inspecting our fire exting uishers and also for ladder inspections. B. Plant Toxicity Manual The new Toxicity Manual for the plant has been issued to personnel within the plant, Beeler-Manske Clinic and Danforth Hospital. PLANT MANAGER'S COMMENTS - G. L. Tromblee Both the insulators (1 year without an injury) and Dept. 513 (almost 2 years without an injury) have reached or will soon reach safety milestones for their areas.
