TO: Faculty FROM: D. R. Johnson and L. I. Kleinman RE: Grant Proposal
We are planning to submit a new grant to NIEHS to
support the investigation of the effects of lead on the
kidneys of young animals. Our primary concerns will be
the following: 1) can the animal model now being used in
this department to study lead-induced brain dysfunction
be used to study renal dysfunction; 2) can lead produce
renal tubular dysfunction other, than the reported Fanconi
like syndrome, for instance., altered sodium excretion,
urinary concentrating ability, or response to an acid
/"
stress; 3) at what stage of intoxication are glomerular
function and renal hemodynamics affected; 4) do any of
the above parameters correlate with blood or kidney levels
of lead; 5) does infant lead exposure result in incom
plete renal maturation or dysfunction that leads to adult
renal failure. This research should provide some basic
-information concerning renal involvement in pediatric
lead poisoning.
