Vol ume I contains the General Subject and Industrial Section sessions. Volume II the Public Safety, School andCoflege Safety, Home Safety, and Farm Safety sessions. The Transactions are a record of the proceedings of the Congress, condensed and edited here for reference purposes. They are therefore an abridged version of die papers and discussions. The original manu scripts, some of whichhave drawings and charts not reproduced here, are available in the files of die National Safety Council. The National Safety Council, at its Congresses, seeks to eliminate from discussion matters which are not pertinent to the aims of die Con gress, or which are contrary to the CoanctTs policies. However, it can not accept responsibility for views expressed, either in the papers pre sented or in this record of them. Extra copies of Volume I may be obtained by Council members at $2.50 each. Used effectively, the Trans actions volumes can become the safety man's "Five-Foot Shelf--on encyclopedia of estab lished methods as well as of the most suc cessful experiment The safety engineer, the progressive indus trialist and students of safety will find these volumes valuable for reference. They con tain die best knowledge and the long experi ence of the men and women who appeared before the 33rd Annual Safety Congress. For easy use the material has been ar ranged and identified; first by the major headings of the Table of Contents on page ii, and by the comprehensive Index at the bade of tiie book. In the body of the bode each group of meetings is printed inthe same order in which they appeared in the daily time schedule of the original program. ) The detailed alphabetical Index quickly locates specific safety material. It lists items in three ways: (2) by subjects discussed, L e., cyclists, household appliances, military convoys, traffic "dim outs"; (b) by speakers, in the case of formal papers. Speakers' names are printed in italics; (c) by the divi sion or group, as School and College Safety, Home Safety, Farm Safety. _ Solve accident problems. Traffic officers, judges, highway construction men are faced with unprecedented problems caused by the mushrooming of war plants and . the attend ant traffic congestion. Not the least of their troubles is the control and discipline of war worker-driversanddrivers in service uniform. Arousing interest in safety in the schools and in homes and farms becomes easier after reading the experiences of the speakers at the School and College Safety, Farm Safety and Home Safety sessions. Several meetings concern curriculum problems; others farm machinery hazards; and still others house hold equipment, civilian defense, and off-thejob accidents. Speech-making materials asp abundant for the traffic engineer or the school or city offi cial who is scheduled to .talk on accident prevention, either in his own community or at conventions of his own profession. The Transactions contain excellent examples of ' safety talks as well as authorities and quota tions for local press releases, poster and bul letin boards. Safety promotion plans always profit by new and novel ideas. Speakers at the Con gresses offer rich source material for the promotion of safety on highways, in homes and in schools. Outstanding safety leaders axe powerful influences in the promotion of the national safety movement As officers or members of the Council's sections or as public officials they can be helpful in organizing individual safety programs. National Safety Council services and the national safety program will be better un derstood through frequent use of the Trans actions.
