RE: PFAs in food packaging
Thank you for contacting the European Commission, I have been asked to respond on behalf of Commissioner Kyriakides.
The safety of food packaging with respect to human health is regulated in general by means of legislation on food contact materials (FCMs). Businesses are legally obliged to ensure that FCMs do not transfer their constituents (such as PFAS) to food in amounts that could endanger human health in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004. With respect to plastic food packaging, Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 specifically limits the use of PFAS, which can only be used after authorisation and subject to restrictions based on a safety assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on the basis of an scientific assessment of their effects on human health.
In line with the EU chemicals strategy for sustainability and in particular concerns on the environmental impacts of PFAS, the Commission has committed to ban all non-essential uses of PFAS including in food packaging, building on the restrictions already in place. As part of its revision of the FCM legislation the Commission will also ensure that the most hazardous substances are prioritised, including where necessary any PFAS substances. We are already in the process of following up the recent (2020) EFSA opinion to address certain PFAS in food.
I hope this helps to answer your concerns, please don't hesitate to come back to me if you have any further questions.
Kind regards

Subject: PFAs in food packaging
Dear Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides,
I am a Polish resident writing to ask you to bring forward new, strong regulation so that we arc protected from harmful chemicals in food contact materials.
I used to assume that people who were concerned about food packaging and plastics etc were just being misled by conspiracy theorists, but recent studies on the horrific health damage done by these chemicals have left me shaken. Just this morning I read about the transfer of chemicals through breast milk-1 have been breastfeeding my son for over a year in the belief that I was looking after his health, but I'm now learning that I could have been feeding him things that will hurt him.
The people of the EU generally trust that our government is looking after us and is defending our health-1 want to know that this is still the case and that, now we have clear evidence of the harms of PFAs, our EU leaders will act decisively to defend our health and future generations' health.
Please let me know what action the EU is taking to address these concerns.
Best regards,
