In as much as I have spoken somewhat intimately of your Medical Department, although it was not yours at the time to which I refer, it occurs to me that it would be the better part of courtesy to submit it to you for any criticism which you might wish to make. Some of my words go back to the period when I had some talk with Mr. Harrington, at his request, about the needs of duPont in this direction. This was at the time of the difficulties with tetraethyl lead when I was asked by Mr. Harrington to act as consultant for this purpose, and when I was asked for my views as to what was needed. I laid down some specifications for the medical work, and these in part influenced the invitation to Gehrmann to accept the post of Medical Director. I am not uncertain as to the facts, but the propriety of some of my remarks might be questioned by yourself, or your associates or by members of your Company's management, and I would not want to say anything that would be misunderstood or be considered in bad taste. I think this unlikely but I'd feel better about it if you were to look at this and let me know your opinion. If you have no feeling of dissatisfaction with what I've said, I'd like for you to pass this copy along to Mrs. Gehrmann, with the personal note to her which I have enclosed.
