The American Chemical Society
In April 1876 thirty chemists met in New York City to form an American chemical society The first published list of members included 133 names The initial national meeting at New-
port R. I. on August 6 and 7 1890 had 43 chemists in attendance From these beginnings the American Chemical Society today has
become the world's largest body devoted to a single science Its
membership numbers more than 44,000 and registration at its Sep-
tember 1944 meeting was 9,701 Originally the Society was incor-

porated in New York State By Act No. 356 75th Congress 1st
Session it was given a national charter with the approval and aid

Each local section of the Society is asked annually to propose a
person for President On or about November , the Secretary sends to each member a list of these names and a ballot on which to record

select therefrom the President He serves in that post for one year
and then succeeds to the Presidency The President functions as
Vice President and is a member of the Board of Directors Council and
Council Policy Committee By the time he becomes President he has an intimate knowledge of the Society program problems and methods
of operation The Chairman of the Board of Directors is elected annually by the
Directors from the Board membership The Secretary and Treasurer
are elected annually by the Directors
The Board of Directors is the legal representative of Society
It consists of fifteen members officiis six selected from geo
graphical regions and four elected at large and chosen for their business
experience and ability The officio members are the President Presi-

Chemists examines departments of chemistry and accredits those which are considered qualified to offer adequate professional training The Membership Committee considers all applications and admits to membership those who meet the requirements of Bylaw 19. The Committee on Nomenclature Spelling and Pronunciation makes recommendations within the field of its assignment One committee is responsible for obtaining nominations for the ACS Award in Pure Chemistry sponsored by Alpha Chi Sigma and another for selecting the recipient A similar pair of committees exists for each award
Other committees deal with technical problems Typical are the
Committees on Analytical Reagents Hazardous Chemicals and Ex-
4} plosives and Soap and Soap Products A complete list of committees and committee personnel is published
three times a year in CHEMICAL AND ENGINEERING NEWS Usually the

MEMBERSHIP
The various classes of membership in the American Chemical So
ciety and requirements for each are as follows .
Member An ad^'quate collegiate training in chemistry or chemical engineering or its equivalent and five years of graduate training or experience in some form of chemical work Only two years of postgraduate study or experience are required from those who have studied in a department of chemistry or chemical engineering accredited by the ACS and who have been certified by the head of the department as having completed the course recommended by the Society
Junior Membe-r Adequate basic training but insufficient gradu- t
ate study and experience for member senior grade or inadequate }
training but engaged in chemical work

Applicants for membership senior grade and junior grade must be |
