CORFCIUTE INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE 236-3646 July 7. 1M1 ASBESTOS PRODUCTS A EMPLOYE EXPOSURE TO ASBESTOS
t: VESTIHCHOUSE BUILDING - 2016 V. M. Bryant, Director Property 6 .Casualty Insurance
The attached iaforsatioa is provided in an atteapt to coaply vith the following request that you cade to C. V. Sickerstaff, Manager, Industrial Hygiene several weeks ago*
1. List of products canufactured or supplied by (V) which contain asbestos. If possible, please indicate vhich of these products arc no longer aanufsetured or supplied by (V).
2. Eepleye exposure to asbes:os""eu;reac and historical.
At the outset ! want to eentien that this data is by no scans coaplete, but we are hopeful it will provide soee background ieforaation.
During the early to aid 1960's, Industrial Hygiene was encouraging the divisions to elieinate the use of asbestos and find suitable substitutes. In February, 1976 an effort was Bade to gather specific data on*the use of asbestos within the. corporation, and to alert the divisions to Che significance of its continued usage and the prebleas of coapliaoee vith OSHA Regulation. Attachment 1 is a copy of the letter sent to all Industrial Hygiene and Safety Coordinators, inforeing then of a one"day scainar on asbestos. A questionnaire was sent with this letter to survey the use of asestes at each location. Attachment 1Z is a roster of those attending the scainar.
Attachment 111 lists (V) locations that at one tiae or another used aaterial containing asbestos. In Attaehaent IV we have suaaarised Che data supplied on Che returned questionnaires to indicate soae of the Vestinghousc products that contain soae fora of asbestos.
Since 1976 oast of these asbestos products heve been replaced with another type el notarial* Attschneat V is a list of sone of these substitute njterials. We are aware that Trafford PCS has had sone difficulty in finding
a replaceaent for the asbestos-neoprene stop gasket naterial for bushings. At the seoinar, the Haspten people announced that a decision was sade to stop production on asbestos eootaining nicartas. However, because of the special need at other divisions, they nay have sone United production. Bedford docs have sone linited production of coated asbestos paper*
We cannot answer to which (V) products, chat contained asbestos nre no longer
sanufacturcd or supplied, except to note that the Consuner Produets group is
oo longer part of Vestieghousc.
*
In regards to esploye exposure, no nenitering was done prior to 1973. Attachnent VI is a suaaary of asbestos nonitoring done froo 1973 to 1979, which we prepared for the Legsl Separtoent. We can bring it up to date if you need jthis infonsatioa. I have also included Attachnent VII suBaariting data froe the questionnaires to show asbestos products, used during plant operations, that are not included in a (V) product.
Hopefully this data vill be helpful, and if we can be of any furthar assistance give us a call.
