LOUISIANA 707S4 SO* 38S-8000 Don Smith Inland Marine and Terminals NOISE SURVEY ABOARD TOWBOAT LEVITICUS The requested noise survey was conducted July 29, 1977 aboard the Towboat Leviticus on the Mississippi River near Plaquemine, Louisiana. The survey was conducted to determine existing noise levels and to establish which areas require hearing protection. The walk-through survey was conducted with a Bruel and Kjaer Sound Level Meter, Type 2205, which was calibrated prior to beginning the survey. Immediately following the survey a calibration check was performed which proved satisfactory. The readings obtained were on the "A" scale and slow response setting. Both engines were operating and one empty barge was being pushed upstream as the readings were obtained. The diesel engines proved to be the significant noise source. The high noise level emitted by the engines adversely affected the work deck area near the engines' exhaust, the deck area above the engine room, the engine room itself, the generator room directly in front of the engine room and the stairway leading into the engine room (see attached sheet), The high noise levels recorded during the survey require that anyone working in the engine room, while the engines are running, or in the areas described above must wear hearing protection. Caution signs must be prominently posted in the designated noise areas. They should measure at least 14 inches by 20 inches (14" x 20") with black letters on a yellow background. The letters should be large enough so that the sign is clearly legible to anyone entering the area. The sign should state that it is a high noise level area and that hear ing protection is required.
