Dear Brian:
Thanks for the information on the Bologna Ramazzini meeting. The notices have prompted considerable interest in the U.S. Not only does the agenda cover a tremendous range of subjects, but it appears many of the speakers may not have been asked to speak prior to printing the tentative program. I do not expect to attend and, at this time, I do not know who will. The closed press meeting October 6-7 is disconcerting.
I'm glad you have arrangements well under way for Sir Richard Doll's review. Might I suggest two actions would be useful right now.
1. A simple statement (protocol) of what literature is to be covered as well as the nature of the review should be prepared. I already have a request for it. It certainly should not be an elaborate statement. I'm enclosing a possible start of such a statement.
When Sir Richard has a bibliography available, copies might be sent to several people to see if there are omissions. I would be glad to review It and I'm sure Maurey Johnson would as well.
I think we have already indicated our willingness to provide hard copies should he experience any difficulty in getting any of the references. It would also seem appropriate to give Sir Richard copies of prior reviews, such as the two on birth affects by Brian MacMahon and by Downs and Stallones. Some of Geof Paddle's comments might be useful as well.

Numerous studies of the health status and mortality of workers in the vinyl chloride monomer/polyvinyl chloride industry have been reported. It is the intent of this review to examine these reports in order to determine their strengths and weaknesses, to determine whether the stated conclusions are adequately supported by the data in the report, and to look for consistencies and inconsistencies between studies. It is intended that the results of the review will be made public and, if possible, will be published.
