To confirm that cumene phenol is an acceptable substitute for
sulfonation phenol now being used,

SUGGESTED CHANGE
' `
' ''ife
To use cumene phenol from Chocolate Bayou as raw material instead of sulfonation phenol..
justification'
Crude 2, 4-Pichlorophenol at the W. G. Krummrich Plant has be .
made using phenol from the sulfonation process. In approxink: 2y
two years, sulfonation phenol facilities will probably be ret/\,-ed.
A plant test is required to determine the effect of cumene phenol
on the process, and if it has any effect on 2 , 4-dlchlorophenoxy-
acetic acid.
DISCUSSION
Laboratory results shows the finished crude 2,4-dichlorophenol to be dark amber rather than light amber. The 2, 4-dichlorophonoxyacetic acid prepared from cumene 2, 4-DCP in the lab is equivalent to that from sulfonation 2, 4-DCP in appearance, color, odor, yield quality, and reaction rates. The red color from the cumene 2, 4DCP remains in the mother liquor stream.
