The material with the best balance of effectiveness and cost for their use is sucrose octoacetate. Perhaps this or some other similar material would make an effective eating deterrent for paint. We could add it to special paints for use on old houses which were painted with lead-baaed paint, children would be discouraged from eating the paint chips since the fresh paint would have a foul taste.
