Hence, in the process of. smelting ores
such as zinc, copper and silver, mixed
with lead, we find a rather high lead

Fumes from hot meuls carry not only poisons but numerous minute dust particles. This explains the inca pacities occurring among those engaged in . acetylene and electric cutting and welding. When men are so employed over a prolonged period of time, the constant inhalation of fumes and dust might produce symptoms of the metal upon which they work. In the ship building trade, particularly in the con struction of metal ships, we find occa sional cases of metal-fume fever. "Brass chills" and "spelter shakes" from zinc are names applied by the lay people to such diseases. The terrific heat ap plied to some of our common metals and alloys by acetylene torches produces suf ficient fumes to cause a temporary inca pacity in 24 hours. Permanent disability from such causes is rare, however.

Report of Exhibits Committee. The
Committee reported that definite steps
had been taken to assure good attendance
at the National Exposition in the Conven
tion Hall, and that these measures in
cluded the following: '
Routing of delegates through the Ex
hibit Hall; suitable notices in programs;
luncheon and cloakroom* facilities; an
"Exhibit Day* in each Section program;
a worth-while attendance prise, with eligi
bility limited to delegates who showed a
real interest In the exhibits; cooperation
of exhibitors in providing attractive dis plays; providing exhibitors with daily registration of delegates;, publicizing the exhibits.
Report of Program Committee. The Committee reported that a series of talks on five different subjects had been pre
pared for presentation at the National Safety Congress. (A record of the Safety Equipment session will be found else where in these proceedings.)
Other reports presented were those of the Publicity Committee, the Finance
Committee, the Activities Committee and the Membership Committee.
Meeting of October 6, 1936
The meeting was called to order by Chairman T. A. Willson, who had been re-elected. Executive Secretary A. O, Boniface acted as secretary of the meet ing.
George Shull, J. B. Davies and C H. Callaway were appointed directors.
It was agreed that committee appoint ments .would be made later by the Execu
tive Committee and that members would be notified of the results by mall.
It was voted to continue the positions of executive eecretary and assistant treasurer on the present basis.

Permanent disability from such causes is rare, however.
Diseases Due to Dust
Twenty-five per cent of ail workers exposed to high concentrations of inor ganic dust are expected to develop changes within their lungs due to that agmey. We are at a loss to explain why the other 75 per cent arc not so affected.

It is an excellent solvent for grease, oils and cements, and because of that property it is important in many phases of the rubber and cleaning indus tries. In the manufacture of shoes ben zol may be an ingredient of the dressing applied to the leather and of the cement which fastens the heels and soles. Not only in the shoe trade but in other branches of industry where mploytts work with gummy, sticky material, the workers soon learn of the solvent and cleansing action of this liquid and nae it freely for that purpose upoo them selves. The subsequent outbreak of skin aflSctions may be the first indication of such unauthorised use.
