INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE SURVEY Inter Company Corresponc -- r-- _ - i y ;i, _ia.77 _ Engineering -trice I t-tlOA employee * Indus, Eelat. Dhelsea ?rov Grounds Ihrys1er lenter On June ID, 1?"" , Messrs. D. N . James, ?. Havrilia, ana the writer investigated employee exposure to airnorne asbestos fibers in Department "640. The results of this investigation are listed on the attached data sheet opposite the correspond ing job description. Note that both the peak exposure levels and the eight hour time-weighted average exposure levels were found to be well below their respective OSKA limits. At the time of this investigation, the use of the small celt sander m the Brake Laboratory for grinding ana finishing asDestos-cased friction materials was brought to cur attention Industrial Hygiene recommends that this belt sander be equippe with local exhaust ventilation. A flex duct serviced by the existing dust collector should provide adequate control of any asoestos fibers generated at this work station. In regard to medical examinations, IFR 1911. 1000 j)3) states, `every employer snail provide or make availaole compre hensive medical examinations to each of his employees engaged m occupations exposed to air s e m e concentrations of asbestos fioers. * Altncugr. one regulation does not refine exposure* recent court decisions have defined exposure m terms of the lower detection limit, i.e.* 3-1 fibers per zucio centimeter of air. Since the eigr.t hour time-weighted average asoestos exposure of mechanics removing brake drums has not been shown to exceed 0.1 fioers/cc. we can conclude that annual examina tions are not required for Department "640 mechanics. Hcwevei Industrial Hygiene recommends that the plant continue to prov: annual medical examinations to all employees assigned to asbes grinding operations. In addition, we recommend that a single asoestos medical examination be offered to the employees who *ere stationed m Department "640 m 19"! see attachment A) . This recommendation is cased on the fact that our records indicate that elevated airoorr.e asbestos levels were associ ated with a Brake Laccratory dust collector used m 1-973. A -edical examination inducing a chest roer.tger.ccram ar.d pulmot function testing sr.culd help to identify any'health impairment caused by tr.e malfunctioning dust collection equipment, which *as used until April. 1973* DC 4927 D. ?. Medical examinations have been scheduled for all eatDloyees who were assigned to department 7640 during 1973. examinations will be complete by mid-Septemoer 1977 and the results will be forwarded to your office.
