Air Sampling for Asbestos Fibers
1 attended a technical symposium, "Asbestos and Asbestos - Related Diseases", on November 16 in Los Angeles. It was sponsored by the Southern California section of the American Industrial Hygienist Association.
One of the speakers was J. M. Dement, an engineer with NIOSH, who presented "Sampling and Evaluation of the Work Environment". I spoke to him, along with Drs. J. K. Waggoner and W. M. Johnson of NIOSH, after the meeting about sampling
techniques.
They stated positively that all samples for asbestos fiber should be collected with the millipore filter in'the "down" position -- to simulate nasal inhalation. This is presumably the accepted- OSHA procedure and I. would assume that the USBM would follow suit. You may want to consider using this procedure for plant samples.
Dr. Selikoff a I so spoke at this meeting and he made an impressive presentation.
In spiTe of- his published data about asbestos hazards, he made it very clear that
he realized that asbestos was an important and vital raw material and that its
use could not be prohibited. I talked to him after the meeting and he has since
asked for information about "Calidria" pellets.
