III. OPERATING PROCEDURES (CONTINUED) 0. Reactor Manvay Opening Procedure

The reactor^manway must be raised by the "A" operator occasionally to replace the "0" ring for the manway, to inspect the reactor sprayhead patters, for testing purposes, to install arfair mover for maintenance, or to prepare the reactor for entry. The "A" operator must open the manway safely and be careful not to expose himself or others to vinyl chloride. The "A" operator will per form the following steps to open the manway: 1. When instructed to open the reactor manway by the Shift Super
visor or lead operator, proceed to the top of the reactor to the specified manway. Carry a fresh air mask if the reactor contains slurry in it. 2. Check the pressure gauge on top of the reactor for pressure or vacuum. If the reactor has a vacuum on it, notify the lead operator to open the atmospheric vent valve. If it contains pressure, identify the source of the pressure and it must be recovered prior to opening the manway. 3. When the pressure gauge shows 0 psig, open the bleed valve to verify the pressure. There should be no pressure or vacuum on the reactor before opening the manway.

4. Unlatch the lock on the Lenape* manway roll-bar and pull the
bar around and up to open the manway.
5. Slowly raise the manway four to six inches and hold it in
that position.
6. If the reactor is empty, call the lead operator and have him
on the reactor evacuation ejector to pull air inward
through the manway. If it contains slurry, do not cut on the
ejectorj Un
7. Finish raisj-ug me manway.
8. Before closing the manway, put a new "0" ring on the manway.
