LABORATORY OF APPLIED PHYSIOLOGY UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI COLLEGE OF MEDICINE GENERAL HOSPITAL August 31, 1932 To Refinery Superintendents Dear Sir: During the past several years in which the medical staff of the Ethyl Gasoline Corporation has made periodic examinations of refinery employees engaged in mixing Ethyl Gasoline, the precautionery measures in this work have been carried out so consistently that few diffi culties of any kind have been encountered. As a consequence of this state of affairs, it is now quite clear that if the present conditions and precautions are maintained, we need not anticipate occupational lead poisoning from this source. Accordingly, the medical director of the Ethyl Gasoline Corporation has concluded that it will not be necessary to examine these employees more frequently than once a year. This policy is therefore being inaugurated. Its success will depend upon the consistent adherence to the rules and regulations which have been prescribed for this work, I am sure that we will receive the fullest cooperation of refinery authorities in this connection. In inaugurating this policy, I wish to point out that a great many extra trips to refineries will be made necessary except as some attempt is made to see to it that the requirements In mixing personnel for an entire year are provided In advance. It may not be possible to foresee every eventuality. It would be desirable, however, for the management to consider what their requirements are likely to be, in order that suitable men may be examined, at the time of the next trip. Furthermore, it seems desirable to inform you in advance of the doctor's visit in order that every man who is engaged in this work may be available for examination. .We do not wish to miss any men if it is possible to avoid so i-O doing. This is to inform you therefore that one of the Ethyl Gasoline doctors will visit your refinery on or about K " 002282 We shall appreciate very much your efforts to cooperate with him in fulfilling the above suggestions. It is not our purpose to reduce in any way our responsibility for the care of these men. We shall wish in the future as In the past to be kept fully Informed If any illness developes in the case of any employee, and if any difficulties of any kind arise in connection with equipment or the carrying out of regulations.
