G. M. Ellsworth, Springfield plant manager of Monsanto Company, announced today that one production building of the sprawling plastics manufacturing facility will be shut down approximately July 1, 1973. Such things as production and maintenance scheduling, personnel vacation replacements, as well as the impact of future projects make it difficult to -assess at this time the total impact of the shutdown on the plant's total personnel needs. Presently there are over 100 buildings it'' : fop' Monsanto's major plastics manufacturing site. Approximately 2800 are employed at both Monsanto's Springfield plant and Bircham Bend plant. In announc ing the shutdown, Ellsworth said, "Monsanto still considers Springfield its major U. S. site for plastics manufacturing and research. In the past few years we have invested considerable capital here to modernize and expand facilities. We have several other projects on the drawing board.
