Hunter A summary report on the Supervisors Safety Training Course was distributed to the members of the Board. It was the consensus of the group that this training was generally very good. There were some constructive criticisms presented by various numbers. Two committees for centralized safety meetings were approved. The committee for the next supervisors' safety meeting will be Messrs. T. R. Winkle, Production; R. H. Benson, Research; and W. Stopowy, Engineering. The committee for the next clerical centralized safety meeting will be Lillie Capps, Sales; Virginia Nash, Plant Inspection; Hermlne Roberts, Person nel; and Peggy Owens, Production Coordination. These committees should meet and prepare a program plan to be presented to the Board, Members of both committees will be notified by the secretary of the Board. Several Items were discussed In connection with the progress of the new safety program. 1. The provision of the special permit under Bulletin P-0117 will require close cooperation between super intendents, general operating supervisors and oper ating supervisors In the planning of work requiring a special permit in order to avoid delays In the pro gress of the preparation of the work. The Board was informed that the minor injury reporting mechanism is now under study in an effort to make it a more effective tool for accident prevention. 3. Future training for chief operators and leadmen in the safety program was discussed* and the safety department will prepare and present a plan for such training to the Board for consideration. 4. The sprinkler system testing was discussed. Notices concerning the time for these tests will be issued soon. It should be noted* as provided in Bulletin P-0116* that superivsion is expeoted to do the actual testing. This is especially true for sprinkler systems. Supervision must notify the fire department when the sprinkler system is inoperative so that FIA oan be informed of fire protection impairment as required under our insurance. FIA inspections of these systems* normally on quarterly basis* will be handled by Mr. Ray WllBon with the FIA inspector. Operating supervi sion will be informed as to the time of the inspection. 3. The foam system checking will be done as it is now set up. The weekly inspection of the header systems will be made by the fire department. The monthly inspection* in case of styrene plant* and the semi-animal inspection* in oase of the rest of the plant* will be done by operating supervision. Operating supervision will prepare the chamber for inspection and make the inspection. The fire department representatives will be available to assist in this inspection as requested. The report from the Hourly Safety Committee was distributed to members of the Board. Under old business* the parking lot requested to be located west of the cooling tower in polyethylene* was re ferred to Messrs. Simons and Carlisle for action. Under new business* three items were presented, all of which were referred to Mr. Wood. These included: 1. The repair of company truck beds. 2. Cleaning of soaffold boards and use of non-ckld boards. 3. Establishing a tire inspection program for vehicles. The status of major outstanding safety jobs was discussed. 1. The nitrogen system is still under study by the Plant Engineering design group. The potable water system has been tied-in in some areas, but others have not completed the work. Mr. Gilmore will discuss this with Mr. Drebo of Engineering in an effort to expedite the completion of this Job. 3. Critical shower and eye bath alarms--Several areas have not made these tie-ins, primarily because of the confusion as to the provisions of this work. Mr. Gilmore will prepare a status report for the Board. 4. New eye bath standards--It has been agreed that the new eye bath which is being used in this plant will replace existing baths as they need repair or re placement. A standard for this plant will be prepared by the safety department and presented to the Board. For the present, the submission of this standard to St. Louis and the decision on standard color coding has been tabled. 9. Pipe rack signs--Several of theBe have been installed, others are ready for installation and some have not been requested as yet. Mr. Wood will determine the status of this work and request local areas for in formation as required. 6. Plant Communication System--The Bell Telephone System cannot be Installed uner existing conditions due to an injunction. Stromberg Carlson has submitted a proposal for a similar system but the cost of $31/000, plus wire, seems unreasonable. Plant Engineering will continue to work on this project. 7. Coast Guard Security Passes--The Coast Guard representa tive will be in the plant in September to prepare port security passes for selected personnel, in prepara tion for this, it will be necessary that applications be prepared, pictures taken and proof of citizenships pro vided. Information concerning these will be provided by the safety department to the various supervisors involved. The rotating supervisor in the safety department, Mr. Pete Tremont, SC 16815 LAM024114 PLANT MANAGER'S SA+^Ft BOARD MEETING 7-13-59 PAGE 4 has been assigned the revision of the Manual of Safe Practices* The proposal for the revision was presented to the members of the Board and comments on this proposal are to be sent to the safety depart ment by July 16. A report from the Housekeeping Committee of the Central Safety Council concerning the selection of the winning areas in house keeping, was read. Those areas winning plaques for the first half of 1959 were: Manufacturing------ -------Department 31 Non-Manufacturing ------- Insulators Office Buildings----- -----Shop Offices This report also made honorable mention of department 5-7, the machinist8 and the construction offices. It also states, that the most overall improvement was made by the control laboratories. This will be publicized as a news item in the weekly newsletter, and a letter will be prepared for the Board to the honorable men tioned areas. The Industrial Supervisor magazine, which has been sent to each of the superintendents slnoe the first of the year, is considered a valuable tool in safety work and should be circulated to members of supervision within the superintendents' groups.
