a Dr. Irving J. Selikoff, a physician at the VX. Sinai
_
Hospitalin New York, has made unwarranted t.xc un
scientifically based claims concerning the heaiwn
ssSoUiOd with the . of aibMtdS M d liber
glass materials in the construction industry, de
iseS as a basis for his claims a tnree-year study he
has been conducting for the Insulation Union Workers.
His claims have been given greater cr*diJf,xi i ^ ntlv because of a $32$.,COO research received from the United States Public Heal.n Service to study the health aspects of Mbestos ana fiber Dr. Otto Besse is the Director of the Division of ^search Grants of the National Institutes of Health whose uvis-on authorized Dr. Selikoff s grant. The Division of Occv^tional Healtii of the United States Public neal-h s^vioe, according to Dr. Lewis J. Crailey, feels tnat Dr. Selikoii S S S r S . not scientifically based. In fact the worx of
Dr Crailey on the environmental aspects refutes ohe work d ^ a b v D"X Selikoff. However, Dr. Crailey* a work has no. r^eivid lhe publicity that Dr. Selikoff s work has. Toe Division of Occuoational Health has not tried to intertere
with Dr. Selikoffs research grant- They are, however, calling to the attention of the USPHS Contract Konitor the statements that Dr. Selikoff has mace in the pasw which a.e considered ur.aeiur.i-:iically based. They will continue to co
this in the future.

ture ".r>ichj if P'-'vuented, would servo to refute Dr Seli--
koffs claims. -<r. Sclikoi'f s activities have stimulated
an urgent need i\*r industry to contribute its experience
to the scientific literature. This could fee done on an
industry vide bast3 through tne Industrial Hygiene
Foundation preserving the anonymity of the individual
participating companies.
c.. it was felt the .tost serious effect of Dr. Selikoff's
claims have been on the customer and general public rela tions. The public will hesitate to use a proctet that is* purported to be associated with serious health implications.
a. Johns-Danville .Corporation has paid off on five or six mesothelioma cases where they were associated with significant pulmo:uiry fibrosis and massive dust exposures. They cost on an average of $146,000 per case.
e. The Division of Occupational Health of the USPKS has spent
$125,000 per year for environmental studies on asbestos.
There have been no funds available for associated medical
studies.
.
.
f. The Research Grants Division of the USPHS is supporting two other asbestos studies at the present time. Dr. Vorwald of Wayne State University is using radioactive tagged asbestos particles in order to study the fate of these particles
when they reach the lungs. The other study is by Dr. Clark Cooper who is performing a study of the construction industry in San Francisco with reference to the health hazard associated with asbestos and fiber glass use. This latter study will be similar to Dr. Selikoffs study which was performed on the Sast Coast.
g. A point was made that the health hazard to workers involved in the manufacturing of as bos .os and fiber glass products is not comparable to the health hazard of the construction workers who use those produai.3. Much higher dust exposures are experienced by the construction workers.
