Toronto, Dept. 270, V. F. Hove KagersviUa, D. Vanni Attached Authority request
FE3 4 1571
Attached is an authority request for tbe purchase and installation of a 360 C? Pangbcrn dust collector for the Joint Ceaent department.
The manufacture of Joint Cements require* the mixing of several dry ingredients to produce a variety of product formulations. Tbs three main products producad are Perf-A-Tape and Sheetrock Joint ' Conpounds and Durabond on tbs ona xaehina and Raadi-Hix esepcund on tbe other machine. The dumping, nixing and packaging of tba3a ingredients creates a serious dusting problem in this area. Tbe present 5200 C.T.F.. 7; ngbcru dust collector does not have tbe capacity or flexibility to adequately control dustinjr at all points around the production equipment espacially uben both machine*
are in operation.
This collector dates back to tbe thirties and uas transferred from another department in 1956 uben tba present facilitie* to
manufacture Ferf-A-Tape Joint Cement were ins tailed. In 1965
equipment to manufacture Readi-Kix Joint Compounds was added to
this department but no allowances were made for extra dust collection. Tee Raadi-Kix vent system was hooked into tna existing collector system. In 1967 the manufacture of Duraoond began and arcin no extra, facilities were provided for dust collection. 7c orevent contamination of products as Durabond ard re dr-A-Tape art not compatible the collector cannot cm used for tae manufacture of Durabond as well as .tbe other joint compounds, hence wnec Durabond is being made tbe collector is by passed and all dust exhausted to atmosphere.
One of tbe main ingredients used in all joint cement compounds is
Asbestos which is very hazardous to personnel if not properly
controlled. If breathed in sufficient quantities it can create a
lung t.Urgent known as Asbestosis.
.
Tbe Ontario Dept, of Labour,'on1 tbe reeotmnendation of its inspectors vbo have conducted several' dust count tests in tbe Jcint Cement urea, has informed tbe plant that tbe asbestos dust level in this vork area is toe high and that dust collection facilities to control asbestos dust in the area must be improved if ue are tocontinue in production.
It is therefore necessary to purchase and install a 12,522 C,F.?`.. dust collector in the Jcint Cement area.

Tbe new collector will have the capacity to adequately bandit ail
dust producing points ia the two operations. The present collector
will be used only Tor the manufacture of Durxbond, By using this
collector only for Durabcnd and the new collector for all other
products there will be no contamination of products and any material
collected can be recycled rather than exhausted to the atmosphere
which is the present practice,
'
The health hazard cf asbestos dust will be eliminated which is
necessary for the prevention of lung ailments among vcrisers, and all directives of the Ontario Dept. cf Labour, as par attached report, will have bean met.
Chicago Engineering assistance is requested, to verify additional steel structures selected for the support of the new 10 tan collector.
