SUBJECT Respiratory Protection For Vinyl Chloride
Your memo contained some good points concerning the respiratory protective equipment used for protection against vinyl chloride. The following suggestions are offered as solutions to each point.
1. The Survivair masks will be converted to pressure-demand masks. This will cause each mask to have a constant pressure inside the facepiece which will be greater than atmospheric pressure and allow the wearer to use his regular prescription glasses. The only problems associated with pressure-demand units will be the education of employees and increased consumption of air.
2. Full air bottles are stocked in the storage rack at the Shift Supervisor's office in Plant "A". An adequate stock is maintained at this location and checked daily. You may want to maintain a small stock in your area which can be drawn from the central storage rack.
3. We have 40 Survivair units available for VC use only and I feel that this is an adequate supply. We have additional equipment available which is used for other purposes, but could be used for VC if necessary.
