MISSOURI 43140 IS t 41 347-740 0 Mr. Gene Streb Safety Representative Nooter Corporation 1400 South 3rd. St. Louis, Missouri 63104 Dear Gene: As you requested air samples were taken during the removal of overhead pipe insulation in the north pump room of the DU-1. These samples were collected on January 16, 1986, while three laborers removed approximately 40 feet of pipe insulation in the north end of the pump room. Asbestos warning tape and signs were placed around the removal area to limit exposure to other personnel in the area. Workers wore protective clothing and approved respiratory protection while removing insulation. Water was applied to the insulation with hand sprayers as it was removed. Due to the temperature of the insulation, total wetting was not possible. The insulation was placed directly into labeled plastic bags for disposal. Area samples collected outside the removal area were less than the OSHA medical action level of 1 fiber per cubic centimeter (f/cc). Personal and area samples taken from inside the removal area were below the OSHA standard of 2 f/cc. However, the personal sample did approach one-half the OSHA permissible exposure limit. To maintain exposure levels below one-half the PEL, it is recommended that additional water be applied to the pipe insulation as it is removed. Should you hava any questions regarding our monitoring activities please feel free to call. DouglaXN. Nimmo Certified Industrial Hygienist cc: V. J. The collection media was 25mm, 0.8 micron MCE filters. 2 When sample results are reported as less than (<), the fiber level was less than the reliable limit of quantification for the volume of sample collected. The number reported is the detection limit for the volume of that sample. LAM 019581 ABS-000391 3
