A list of measures, to be implemented immediately, with the intention of complying with NIOSH recommendations in the subject matter was presented and discussed. The final issue of the list will be distributed to all areas today. 2. Points of particular concern and/or emphasis were: A. It will be very difficult, if not impossible, to use an airline mask in the mass resin autoclaves. On the basis of our knowledge of the reasons for the recommendation to do so, we believe assurance that VCI concentrations remain below 50 PPM within the autoclave (and paste and pearl polys, as well) will allow safe use of an approved chemical cartridge respirator. B. If it is finally decided that those persons having exposure to VCI and PVC are to be furnished daily changes of protective clothing ("uniforms'1), and will be required to take showers, this group will include: (1) Resin Baggers -2 (2) Plant Warehousemen -1 (3) Pearl/Paste and Mass Resin Personnel -44 (4) All Cmmpound People except Baggers -40 (5) Dryer Personnel -12 (6) Tank Farm Technician -1 (7) Catalyst Makeup Technician -1 (8) Instrument Technicians -5 (9) All Maintenance Personnel -30 except Boiler House and Storeroom (10) Waste Treatment Technicians-! Ve would expect 35 to 40 people would be required to take showers at the termination of each rotating shift and the regular day shift. With only 8 shower heads in our present changeroom, this demand would necessitate staggering shift starting and quitting times on a temporary basis, and the expansion of these facilities on a permanent basis. D. If showers become mandatory, we would be required to pay direct workers for time spent showering beyond their normal 8-hour day. We feel 0.2 hours (@ time and one-half, or 0.3 hours at straight-time) would . be adequate. E. Since delivery of the Bendix Organic Vapor Analyzer remains indefinite, we intend to replace the four professional people presently assigned responsibility for providing around-the-clock OVA coverage with four technician trainees. These trainees should have familiarity with the polymerization areas and we presently have four such trainees available, (M. Whipkey, C. Van Namee, L. Poulson, F. Faunt). We also plan to train our four shift laboratory lead technicians in the use of the OVA and have the trainee report to the lead technician on his assigned shift.
