Dear Dr. Bartles I am entirely villing to accept the chairmanship of the Publi cation and Editorial Committee, hut I think that I should have some instructions or at least some suggestions as to vhat should he done hy this committee. I think also that the composition of the committee should depend to a considerable extent ou vhat is to he done. You vlll remember that I reported on the work of this committee at the last meeting of the Board of Directors, pointing out that nothing had been done and that no meeting had been held. I vas not unduly embarrassed by this, since I had told Dr. Vlttmer that I vas not prepared to under take any very constructive vork, partly because I vas not avare of vhat the desires of the Association vere, and partly because I vas svamped with other vork vhich I considered more urgent. That situation Is still the same. In my opinion, the Association ought to do something about the Journal, vhich is its official publication. This Journal has been improved over vhat it vas formerly, hut it is still not good. Certainly it is not a publication that the organization can take pride in. There are probably many reasons for this, some of vhich go hack into the early history of the publication. Whatever is to he done vlll depend to some degree on the poli cies of the Society in both professional and financial matters. It vould take time vhich I do not have 0 deal vlth this pro blem adequately, and I believe the matter vould have to he con sidered carefully by yourself and others before any very speci fic program eould he developed. In any oase I should like to have your suggestion as to vhat should he done at the present time. It is only on this basis that I am really in a position to decide vhether or not I am able to do any more than merely be a nominal head of an inactive committee. I hate to be on committees that have no meaning, and it is for this reason -orimarlly that I pass this matter back to you for consideration. Dp.
