OSHA Air Standard, effective July 1, 1976 (determined hy air sampling): a. a-hhur, time-weighted average of 2 fibers, longer than S nicroneters in length, per cubic centimeter of airs b. Colling concentration (never to be.exceeded) of 10 fibers, longer than S nicroneters in length, per cubic centimeter of air. 2. EnnnocTin* Controls, such as isolation, enclosure, exEatisr ventn.nr ion and dust collection, are to be used to achieve compliance with exposure limits. 3. Hand-operated and nower-oncTated tools, such as saws, abrasive wheels and drills, areTTdT T3 be used on asbestos products until such tine that thoy are provided v/ith local exhaust ventilation. 4. Where practicable, asbestos is to be handled, applied or removed in a v"t state sufficient to prevent the release of fibers over'tKe""acceptable Units. 5. Conplianee with the above exposuro limits is not achievod hy the use of re^oirotors only. However, respirators should be worn, when handling unwetted asbestos products. 6. Cnod honsekoe"ln, requires that work areas he maintained free of accitrwYations of asbestos fiber which may become airborne in sufficient quantities to exceed proscribed limits. These fibers should he vacuumed, not swept. In addition, asbestos waste, debris or scrap should not be allowed to litter work areas. Asbestos waste products should he collected and disposed of in sealed, impermeable bags, or other closed, impermeable containers properly labelled. Asbestos products, such as gaskets, which are fabricated at the plant and nay have frayed edges, should also be stored in sealed impermeable bags cleaTly labelled. Pre-lahelled bags (30'* x 37", 4 nl thick) for disposal of asbestos scrap only are available from the Safety Office, Adhesive backed caution labels for other containers are available from the Environmental Sciences Department. * 7. Asbestos products should be used with restraint. Depart ment supervisors should investigate the possibility of using asbestos substitutes, such as Refrasil and Kaowool. Where only asbestos will perform a Job adequately, the . anprepriate department supervisor should authorize it* use for that job only, 8.
