Fanny 'ject Elimination of Asbestos from Bendix Facilities and Product Designs The recent survey of asbestos usage showed asbestos materials present in several locations and in a variety of types of applications. This was true both in our facilities and in our product designs. This memorandum is intended to provide a corporate-wide guideline for the elimination of asbestos in our facilities and product designs. 1. Future Facilities and Product Designs a. From today fomard. jia_asbestos-containing material for process or facility use mav be purchased or installed in jendix plants. In the rare cases where no asbestos-tree alternate material is available, approval for purchase or installation must be obtained from Corporate Health and Safety prior to commitment. b. Effective immediately, any new product Hpg-ign chal1 gyring _the use of asbestos in the design. This applies to all pro ducts not released tor manufacture. If no asbestos-free alternate material can be used, approval for use must he obtained from the Corporate Health and Safety organization. 2. Existing Facilities and Products a. Planning for replacement of existing asbestos-containing materials must be done promptly and on a common-sense basisyv? We recommend a phased plan which recognizes tne harzardousness or safety of any material. Basically, the friable (soft, easily crumbled by hand) asbestos materials which can become air-borne are the more hazardous, while non-friable or sealedoff materials are safer. Phase I-Friable asbestos materials (such as sprayed-on insulation) should be planned for replacement by the end of calendar ypar loan. 2.
