At the request of Sales* three aeai*worka batches were wiairii* for ***-- curuoae of trade' aamnlima. fh* automotive showed a raal interest in this type of pignut and Sales deeided to include K-2208 in our lino of noa-bleediag rods and maroons. ' A variahle study was run in the laboratory and in the semi-works and on the basis of these results* plant development was undtrtakan. The result is our present product RT-S6S-D1 BOB Bed Light. tu ggamiMi K-2208 was prepared by coupling "Lithosol" Bed 28 Aeld and beta-oxy-naphthoic aeld (dissolved in 3 parts caustic and 4 parte soda ash) in the presence of manganese sulfate. Develop ment at the boll followed* in the laboratory the K-2208 process was net a duplicable procedure so the manganese sulfate was taken from the soiling end added later as In the regular strike procedure. This plus strike at the boil made for a soro duplioable process and was coded K-2438. fhe K-2438 process was taken into the seal-works whore a abort variable study comprising five batches was run. The vtrieblta were as followsi- 1. Lot 8069 - As K-2438* 2. Lot 9072 - As K-2488* 8. Lot 9111 - As K-2438 but development at 2Q0*f instead of boil to keep i*n foaminff* 4. Lot 9112 - As K-2438 but a 2S decrease in caustic. 3. Lot 9113 - As K-2438 but a 26# lnorsase in caustic. DUP050067006 Lot 9078 mm sot up as & tentative standard. Lots 9069. 9078, 9311, sad 9X18 sere all ok * lot 9118 having tha lightest aasatone, Lot 9X13 was too dark in masstoae to ho of groat interest. Proa tho seai*works BT*563*D (K-243Q) sas takes to the plant vhoro eight tattoo sere made, The first four sera prepared exactly as KH3438, Three sore darker is masstone and all sere seeker than lot 9078 by rubout. In alkyd all sere litter and approximately equal In strength to lot 9078, Too mixes sere made of the four lots but no standard was set up beoause tbs .sixes sere apparently contaminated - a shit* overstripe bleed appeared In .alkyd enamel, A variable study sas nun on the sooond set of four batohee as followst~ 1, Lot 30534 * 10# decrease in soda ash, 8* Lots 30878, 81083, and 31354 - SO# dsoroase in soda ash. All four batohos were acceptable. The last batch, lot 51354, sas set up as standard and the present standard formula 37*368*0 (8) sas adopted* in. mmmmm The following additional variables sere studied on 37*865*0 in the laboratory** 1, Ho manganese in coupling * hotter duplioablllty, 8, Soda ash substituted for caustic In dissolving BOH * lighter aasatone but mors foaming, 3, Temperature of coupling - 0 to 30C, most desirable* 4. Coupling time * little effect. 3, Para Soap coupling - dark masstone end blue tint* 6, Temperature of strike * strike at boll most desirable, 7, Beverse strike * light a&satone when struck at approximately 48c, but no advantage over regular strike, 8, Development temperature * 43 to 100*0 all appeared ok in the laboratory but it ia believed that development at the boll Is most easily duplicated.
