A San Antonio-based federal judge has temporarily blocked Texas from enforcing a state ban on "sanctuary cities."
On behalf of the Trump administration, Attorney General Jeff Sessions had filed a brief in support of the effort, but Judge Orlando Garcia's ruling prevents the law from taking effect.
The measure, known as S.B. 4, was backed by Texas' GOP-dominated Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott. It has been heavily criticized by pro-immigration groups and led to displays of anger in the Texas legislature between opponents and supporters.
