E ffects of Overexposure

Inhalation of excessive crystalline silica n a v cause
silicosis. Overexposure to airborne asbestos fibers may came pulmonary diseases (asbestosis,
m esotheliom a, pleural plaques, and lung cancer). Smoking greatly increases cancer risk from
c a s t a s exposure. The descriptions and symptoms of the aboffe m entioned diseases are giver in Section XI.___________________

HEALTH HAZARDS - DESCRIPTIONS AND SYMPTOMS
SILICOSIS
A disease due to breathing air containing crystalline silica, characterized anatomically by generalised ficrotic changes and the development of m iliary nodulations in both lungs.
The symptoms include gradually increasing difficulty in breathing and non-productive cough, shortness of b re a th , decreased chest expansion, lessened ca p ac ity for work, absence ox fev e r, and increased susceptibility to tuberculosis.
AS5EST0SIS
This is a chronic lung disease in which the lungs become scarred as a result of the biological reaction tc inhaled asbestos. Damage to the lungs is irreversible apd progressively disabling.
A ffected individuals experience shortness of breath on.exertion. Examining physicians may note a bluish color of the lips and tongue, an alteration in the nails, and bear crackles at the base of the lungs. The chest x-ray is found to have an increase in the profusion of small irregular opacities ana deterioration m ay be noted in tests of lung function.
Although asbestosis does not necessarily lead to lung cancer, individuals with this disease are at high risk to develop cancer.
M esotheliom a
This is a malignant tum or of the thin m em branes lining the chest and abdominal cavities. It is an-extrem ely rare ca n ce r in the general population and is alm ost invariably associated with asbestos exposure. It is a rapidly progressive disease leading to death within a y ear or two of appearance.
The first symptom may be shortness of breath or pain in the wall of the chest aggravated by deep breathing or abdom inal pain varying from vague discom fort to severe spasms.
Pleural Plaques
The pleura are the membranes lining the chest cavity. Asbestos fibers reaching th is cavity c a 7 produce scarrin g o f th e se m em branes. .Tais is visible in the chest x-ray as a pleural thickening. If calcium 3alts become deposited in these a re a s , th en pleural plaques a re p ro d u ced . Pleural thickening is a common com plication of pulmonary asbestosis and these x-ray signs are aften used as m arkers of asbestos exposure.
A/C PIPS Lung C ancer
. The sym ptom s include a cough, or a change in the cough h abit, chest pain, and occasionally blood-streaked sputum coughed up from the lungs. The asbestos-related lung can cer occurs m are frequently in the low er lobes. Initial diagnosis is by chest x-ray. SECTION x n PRECAUTIONS FOR HANDLING ASBESTOS-CONTAINING PIPES (Hygienic Practices) In case of cutting or beveling asbestos-cem ent pipes, all hand or pow er-operated tools which may produce or release asbestos fibers should be provided with local exhaust ventilation systems. A sbestos-containing m aterial should be handled in a wet state sufficient to prevent th e emission of airborne fibers. W orkers engaged in th e dem olition of asbestos-containing pipes should be provided w ith appropriate resp irato ry equipm ent approved by the Bureau of Mines or . the N ational Institute for O ccupational Safety and Health and special clothing . such as-coveralls or sim ilar whole body clothing.
I A sbestos-containing w aste should be collected and disposed of in sealed im perm eable bags, or other dosed, im perm eable containers.
