(1) 8-hour time weighted averages. An
employee's exposure to any material
listed in table 0-2, in any 8-hour work
shift of a 40-hour work week, shall not
exceed the 8-hour time weighted average
limit given for that material in the table.
(2) Acceptable ceiling concentrations.
An employee's exposure to a material
listed In table 0-2 shall not exceed at
any time during an 8-hour shift the ac
ceptable celling concentration limit given
for the material in the table, except for
a time period, and up to a concentration
not exceeding the maximum duration
and concentration allowed In the column
under "acceptable maximum peak above
the acceptable
concentration for
an 8-hour shift".
(3) example. During an 8-hour wort
shift, an employee may be exposed to a
concentration of Benzene above 25 p.pjn.
(but never above 50 p.p.m.) only for a
maximum period of 10 minutes. Such ex
posure must be compensated by expo
sures to concentrations leas than 10
p.pjn. so that the cumulative exposure
for the entire B-hour woik shift does not exceed a weighted average of 10 p.pjn.
(c) Table 0-3: An employee's expo sure to any material listed in table 0-3. In any 8-hour work shift of a 40-hour work week, shall cot exceed the 8-hour time weighted average limit given for that material in the table.

(e) To achieve compliance with para graph (a) through <d) of this section, administrative or engineering controls must first be determined and Imple mented whenever feasible. When such controls are not feasible to achieve full compliance, protective equipment or any other protective measures shaij be used to keep the exposure of employees to air contaminants within the limits pre scribed In this section. Any equipment and/or technical measures used for this purpose must be approved for each par ticular use by a competent Industrial hygienist or other technically qualified person. Whenever respirators are used, their use shall comply with 11910.134.

(b) Permujible exposure to airborne concentrations of asbestos fibers--(1) Standard effective July 7. 1972. The 8-hour time-weighted average airborne concentrations of asbestos fibers to which any employee may be exposed shall not exceed five fibers, longer than S micrometers, per cubic centimeter of air. as determined by the method pre scribed In paragraph (e) of this section.
(2) Standard effective July t. 1976. The 8-hour time-weighted average air borne concentrations of asbestos fibers to which any employee may be exposed shall not exceed two fibers, longer than 5 micrometers, per cubic centimeter of air, as determined by the method pre scribed in paragraph (e> of this section.
(3) CeilinQ concentration. No em ployee shall be exposed at any time to airborne concentrations nf asbestos
limits prescribed in paragraph (b> of this section.
(Ill) Spraying, demolition, or removal. Employees engaged in the spraying of asbestos, the removal, or demolition of pipes, structures, or equipment covered or Insulated with asbestos, and in the removal or demolition of asbestos In sulation or coverings shall be provided with respiratory equipment In accord ance with paragraph (d) (2) (ill> of this section and with special clothing in ac cordance with paragraph <d)(3> of this section.

(a) Scope and application. (1) This faction applies to tuiy area in which 4-Nitrobiphcnyl, Otemlcal Abstracts Bcrvice Registry Number t`2333 is mmmlactured, processed, repaukssed, re leased, handled, or stored, but siiall not apply to transshipment in sealed con tainers, except for the labsting require ments under paragraphs (e> (2), (3), and (4) of this section.
(2) This section shall not apply to eolid or liquid mixtures containing less Ur.n 0.1 pcrcer.t by weight or volume of 4-Nitrobiphonyl.
(b) OeA'iiiions. For the purposes of this section: <1> "Absolute filter" Is one capable of i-ctoining 99.97 percent of a mono disperse aerosol of 0.3 pm particles.
(2) '`Authorized employro1' means an employee whose duties require him to be in the regulated area and who has been specifically assigned by the employer.
(3) "Clean change room" means a room where employees put on dean clothing and/or protective equipment In on environment free of 4-Nitrobipbenyl. The clean cliangc room shall bo con tiguous to and have an entry from a shower room, when the shower room facilities arc otherwise required in this section.
(4) "Closed system" means an opera tion involving 4-Nltrobipheuyl where containment prevents the relcass of 4Nitroblphenyl into regulated areas, nonreguiated areas, or the external environ ment.
(5) "Decontamination" means the In activation of 4-Nitroblphenyl or Its safe disposal.
(0) "Director" means the Director. National `Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, or any perron di rected by him or the Secretary of Health. Education, and Welfare to act for the Director.
(7) "Dispotal" means the safe re moval of 4-Kitroblphenyl from the work environment.
