To Members Central Committee on Medicine and Health, and Technical Advisors
Gentlemen:
At the request o f the Chairman, Committee on In d u s tria l Hygiene, members o f the Medical and Health Committee are being asked to contribute
information regarding th e ir environmental health experience-with the use of asbestos in the petroleum Industry. 1This in q u iry i s prompted, by. rep o rts of epidemiologic studies which revealed manifold carcinogenic e ffe c ts .among building trades workers handling asbestos in su latin g m aterial.
To preserve the confid en tial nature o f any information developed by
a contrib u tin g company, Dr. Carl A. Nau (Environmental Health I n s titu te , the
U niversity o f Oklahoma Medical Center, Oklahoma C ity, Oklahoma) has agreed
to serve as a "th ird party" and p o stal cen ter. Those who would p re fe r not
to send the inform ation to me d ire c tly can m ail i t to Dr. Nau who w ill
remove a l l id en tify in g marks including the postmark and re la y i t on to me.
The inform ation w ill be collated and presented to the Cosedttee a t i t s next
spring meeting i f possible. Along with th is information the re p o rt w ill
include a review o f th e published inform ation on the subject of asbestos
exposure and i t s physiological e ffe c ts.
.
Unless two o r more companies can o ff e r some d e fin ite d ata o r informa tio n , the Survey report w ill consist of a review of the lite ra tu re in the hope th a t i t w ill stim ulate fu tu re in v e stig a tio n s among member companies.
Very tru ly yours,

Dear Mr. Holley: ...... '-- I have carefully reviewed the medical records of the above men since their employment in 1958. Neither man has had an unusual number of days off due to iI Iness and there is nothing to suggest a relationship between their illnesses and their wo as insulators.
Truly yours.
