Industrial Hygiene Digest December, 1967 EDITORIAL Announcement has been made previously, at the Annual Membership Meeting on October 10, concerning negotiations between Industrial Hygiene Foundation and the University of Pittsburgh to provide for continued utilization of IHF's Research Lab oratory facilities following the completion of the merger creating Carnegie-Mellon University, since it appeared unlikely that Mellon Institute would continue its lease on the third floor of the Old Mellon Building on the Pitt campus (presently designated as the University of Pittsburgh's Physics Building). Several alternatives were considered by the Foundation's Board of Trustees, but the most attractive and feasible procedure was the continued utilization of the approximately 7, 200 square feet of experimental laboratory floor space currently used by a transfer of the contract arrangement from Mellon Institute to the Univer sity of Pittsburgh. Under the agreement just consummated, should IHF be asked to vacate its present facilities, the University of Pittsburgh has agreed to provide suitable and acceptable space elsewhere. New University health research lab oratory construction being planned for completion in about 1972 appears to be the most promising future site, if and when such a move becomes necessary. It is well known that Mellon Institute has, from the earliest conception of IHF in 1935, provided the assistance needed to keep the Foundation going. In the negotiations cited above, also, the Foundation's membership should appreciate that Mellon Institute was a major asset in assisting in establishing this new relation with the University of Pittsburgh. Thus effective January 1, 1968, our Laboratory, without interruptions to program or change of location, becomes a newly created "Industrial Hygiene Re search Unit" supported by IHF within the Department of Occupational Health of the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health. The Laboratory's present staff will become employees of the University of Pittsburgh. For the immediate future, the Administrative activities of the Foundation will continue to operate from Mellon Institute, but our previous over-all contract covering both laboratory and office operations will be modified to cover only the office functions; that is, the Managing Director and Office Manager, Industrial Hygiene Digest, publica tions, membership, etc, will continue to use the Institute facilities and all matters pertaining to the business activities of the Foundation should be referred to this address. 1 03122707
