A Complete Packing Service
,
Since 1887 The Garlock Packing Company has supplied its products to, and served industry
throughout the civilized world. The Company's familiar caliper-and-scalc trade mark and the
registered name oarlock, which identify all mechanical packings and allied products man
ufactured by Garlock, are trusted emblems around the globe.
'
*
No single catalog could properly describe all the hundreds of types and styles of Garlock
products. This book, therefore, contains only the standard Carlock line--those materials for
which there is general usage and dcmand.-By referring to the text and to the recommendation
table on page 17, the user of this ^catalog generally can select a Carlock product satisfactory
for any ordinary application.
If, however, special equipment is being used or operating conditions arc unusual no product
described in this catalog may exactly suit the requirements. To take care of such unusual
conditions a comprehensive line of special Garlock materials has been developed and is avail
able to the packing user. These hundreds of special products are not included in this catalog.
All Garlock representatives, however, are fullv conversant with these many special materials
and are fully qualified by training and experience to determine which Garlock product is most
suitable for any condition. The services of this corps of competent Carlock representatives
are available to packing users everywhere.
If, following a survey by a Garlock representative, it is determined that a suitable material is
not available either in the line of Garlock standard or special products, an entirely new product
will be developed for the job. Garlock's modem laboratories and test departments arc com-
pletcly equipped and staffed for such work and are devoted exclusively to the development
and improvement of packing materials.
'
Thus, with its standard products, with its special products and with its individually-created -
products The Garlock Packing Company strives constantly to solve every pr King problem and
to justify the Garlock slogan--The Standard Packing of the IForld.

Tlic Caijlock Packing Company consisicntly makes even* riTbrt to place in the liands of its customers pack* ines that arc Stamford in every way. Through the Com pany's Quality Controlled method of manufacture the finished products are right in quality of material, uni form in excellence of workmanship, correct in meas urements and in general couformity with the Company's established standards.
The actual application and care of packings are responsibilities of the user. The few simple suggestions set forth below may save annoyance, trouble and expense if followed out carefully.
fltOD PA CKlkbs
i
Rod packings should be applied to a clean stuffing box. Each ring should be firmly seated, by tamping, as it is applied. When the stuffing box is full, the gland should be tightened with a "Tench to seat the packing properly; then slacken ofT and retighten by hand, locking the glaud a quarter turn with a "Tench. Care should be taken to avoid cocking the gland.
Ammonia compressor rod packings contract during a "freeze back," making it necessary sometimes to tighten the gland to stop leakage. With the returning heat following the "freeze back" the packing expands, and unless the gland then is slackened oil to compen sate for this expansion the packing may be damaged. Most of the packing failures on ammonia compressors are caused by the failure to adjust the packing after a "freeze back."
Packings applied to hot water pumps sometimes cause trouble because of expansion as the temperature of the water increases. In this service packing should be watched caref by for a few days after application and the gland slackened oIT from time to time if ex pansion or swelling of the packing has occurred.
Proper lubrication is essential. A liberal application of one of the Carlock lubricating compounds described in the Miscellaneous Products Section of this catalog to all surfaces of rod packings before installation is strongly recommended. Rods should also be swabbed with the same compound at frequent intervals. Ob servance of the above practice will reduce friction, prevent scored rods and add life to the packing.
Before applying gaskets the flanges should be cleaned thoroughly. Caskets should be cut and centered so that no portion of the inner diameter or flange of the gasket projects beyond the flange of the pipe or equip ment on which the gasket is being applied.
Many gasket users wish to coat gaskets with a paste before applying them. Pastes sometimes used for this purpose actually arc harmful to the gaskets. Two com pounds especially developed for gasket pastes and suit able for use against steam, water, air, nil, gasoline, gas. weak acids or alkalies, either hot or cold, are:
Carlock Casket Paste Compound No. 1 for gaskets applied to smooth surfaces. Garlock Sealing Compound No. 101 for gaskets applied to rough or pitted surfaces. When tightening the gasket in the flange make sure that the bolts are drawn up evenly all around. Unless this is done trouble will follow. Please see the data showing compression characteristics of gaskets appear ing in the Sheet and Gasket Section of this catalog. In the event of apparent failure of any packing at any time the Company will gladly have a competent Carlock Representative investigate all of the plant conditions as applying to packings, and make suitable recommendations for future packing usage.

Hot Oarlock Lattice-Braid Packing Differs from Ordinary Braided Pacta

Latticc-llraid
In 'Garlock Lattice-Braid ere/y braiding strand passes diagonally through the body of the packing at an angle of approximately 45. This makes a completely unified structure. It is braided internally as well as externally. Even- braided strand contributes to the strength of the entire mass. -
Ordinary- round or braid-over-braid In the braid-over-braid method (sometimes called cover-on-cover) the packing is built-up to the re quired size by braiding one or more covers around a center core. Each cover is entirely separate from the core and the other covers. With no structural bond the finished material is far from an integral unit.

In service, all packings are subject to war on the sur face contacting me moving rod. hveinuaily the strands of ordinary braided packing will wear through on the working surface. When this occurs such braided pack ings immediately go to pieces and become worthless because the structure ot me packing itself is destroyed.
With Carlock lattice-braid packings suen disintegra tion cannot happen because the structural design of Lattice-Braid holds the integral strands together as a

the lubricant, the packing becomes exceedingly porous. At this stage, in order to prevent leakage, -it becomes necessary to exert extra' heavy gland pressure and to squeeze the packing tightly to fill the space in the stuffing box. This extreme gland Y pressure is bad because it not only destroys the J fibre of the packing but it may result in friction
angle unit even when the material is worn far beyond the serviceable limits of wear possible with ordinary braided packings. Lattice-Braid Packings, therefore, are more economical because they last longer.
With Garloek Lattice-Braid packings porosity is built into the structure of the packing. The amount or degree of porosity is pre-determined and remains in the struc ture throughout the life of the packing. Where high

The braided structure of Lattice-Braid imparts a flexi bility not obtainable with any other braided packing. Lattice-Braid packings of large sizes can be formed into ring5 around rods of small diameter without distortion of The packing. This is possible because every braiding strand in Lattice-Braid passes diagonally through the packing. The materials commonly used for flat flange gaskets,
their compression characteristics, and service for which
they arc recommended are indicated below.-
Leaks in bolted flange joints gasketed with flat gas
kets frequently are caused by insufficient bolt pres
sure. It is important, therefore, to employ sufficient
bolts of ample size. In determining the number and
size of bolts a safe rule is to provide a -residual unit
gasket load equal to five to ten times the internal pres
sure after denuding the relieving effect of the internal
pressure.
-
The gasket used on a bolted joint should hare a
flange sufficiently wide to support the original bolt
load before deducting for the internal pressure. Crushin? strength of gaskets varies with temperatures gas ket thickness and gasket material. Upon receipt nf
complete data relating to any specific application we will supply approximate values for the crushing strength of "askets therefor.
The compression or percent reduction in the thick ness of a gasket is related in a considerable degree to the friction between the flanges and the gasket. Higher compressions at all loads usually are obtained if the flanges ore very smooth or lubricated; if narrow' gas kets ate used; if thick gaskets are used; or if high temperatures exist.

CARLOCE 7771 INSULATION TAIE
Garlock 7771 Insulation Tape is made of special Carlock asbestos cloth wrapped around a center core ot asnestos hDrc. The tape is termed wall a flap approximately 3'" wide along one edge and is stronglystuched to make this flap permanent and uniform throughout the length of the tape. This material is recommended for insulating steam pipes on locomotives.
When applying Garlock 7771 tape on locomotive steam pipes it is wrapped around the pipe with the J-f' flap overlapping the
next adjoining course of tape. This makes a
smooth wrapping job and provides a com
p,lete . and unbroken insu--latinrg cover 1 fo<rn the ptoe.
Garlock 7771 tape is made in thicknesses

Garlock S339 and 5349 are made of Garlock asbestos yarn braided into a tubular tape. This tape is weather-proofed and water proofed with a special Garlock rubber cement and receives a special treatment to eliminate tackiness. Garlock 5339 is made of wire-inserted yam and Carlock 5349 of plain yarn, without ware.
The tubular construction of Garlock 339 and 5349 provides a convenient and
effective means for insulating small pipes or tubing on which wrapped tape would be difficult to apply. This material is applied by slipping or pulling it over the pipes and produces a smooth and completely un broken insulating cover.
Garlock 5339 and 5349 are made in any * practicable inside diameter and wall thick ness and generally are supplied in continu ous lengths as specified.
CAIILOCK 11030 FIRE l'AX TAPE
Carlock 8030 Tape is recommended for fire pan gasketing on oil burning locomotives. This material seals against air leakage beI'.een the fire pan and the mud ring.
Carlock 8030 Tape is constructed of two parallel courses or strips of special Garlock 'Asbestos cloth wrapped around a center core of asbestos fibre. These two parallel strips ofgasketing are spaced approximately 1' apart and are joined together by a fabric connecting member. Diagonal slits, spaced
2' apart, are provided in this fabric con necting member which permits easy and quick application of the tape over studs or bolts.
This tape is produced in any practicable width and thickness and usually is supplied in continuous lengths. When specifying width, however, it must be remembered that there is 1' space between the two strips of asbestos gasketing and due allow, ance made for this 2' connecting member.

GARLOCK 0525
Carlock 8525 brushes are of the same con* siruction as Carlock 8380 brushes except that the soft steel reinforcing strips in 'ariock 8525 brushes are approximately
narrower than the plies of asbestos doth and do not extend to the wearing edge of the brush. These metal strips, therefore, do not contact the tinning rolls.
GARLOCK 0755
Carlock 8735 hollow-back asbestos brushes are made of Garlock brass wire inserted asbestos doth, laid up in plies with the outer plies on each side of the brush wider than the center plies, thus forming a chan nel along the hack edge of the brush. This construction effects a reduction in the
weight of the asbestos doth required as compared with a conventional, solid brush. These brushes are securely stitched to gether and have a raw wearing edge. A guide or filler bar, usually of metal, is in serted in the channel in the brush when applied to the equipment.
