Lutz* on Thursday* Kay ,1965. Hr. Lutz made a very extensive and what I consider to be thorough inspection of our plant from rock storage done through all production and shipping areas to and including the officer The tour time was 31/2 hours. In general, Mr. Lutz indicated that he was encouraged and pleased to see the overall improvement in housekeeping and plant clean-up since his previous visit of a year ago. His concentrated attention, however, seemed to be on the primary crusher building and calcine/plaster mill and the "dust" associated with these operations and our efforts to control dust. (Whether or not this was the purpose of his visit at this time is conjecture - he offered no infor mation except that he was here to visit the plant and make an inspection.) At the conclusion of his tour he wrote a violation on the primary crusher and made extensive comments to me on the mill emphasizing that he could also have written a violation on the mill, but would not do so and leave this for us to improve upon. SUMMARY: 1. Primary Crushers We will receive a typed notice from the Division on his written violation which is: " Primary Crushing - Dust Control/ The primary crusher is located in a separate building. The dust at the time of inspection today, with the crusher in operation, was excessive. A person entering the building could not see the machinery and therefore an inspection for physical' safety was not made. The dust in the crusher building was in the quantity of over 100 million particles per cubic foot. Employees now enter this building for operation and service and could enter it for maintenance. By interlocking the doors and the crusher drive make provision that the crusher will automatically stop when any access door is used. Or by other effective means protect the employee who nay enter this building from exposure to gypsum dust in harmful quantities." The original copy is attached. Our compliance date is June 6, 1965. 2. Calcine/Plaster Hill: General comments were repeatedly made regarding excessive accumulated stucco, the amount of dust in the air (easily 50 million particles per cubic foot in his opinion- the maximum allowable under state code.), and the amount of unnecessary dust being emitted into the air. He stressed that our approach should be to (1) do a better job of clean-up and (2) work toward improving openings, lids, equipment, etc., that emit dust into the air. Specifics: a. Excessive accumulation of stucco on beams andtops of bins KG-0018 R.L. Allgood Page 2 especially pebble gyp bins where accumulation was up to and above the walkway. b. Dover plates off one Hummer Screen in operation permitting dust to get into the air. Accumulation of trash around this piece of equipment noted as a tripping hazard. c. Stucco accumulation in pit around #4 stucco elevator up to the floor level. d. Poor fit on lid of K-Spray mix tank permitting dust to get into the air. e. Noted chloride mix tank mixer on ground floor operating although the switch box indicated equipment "off". 3. Unofficially complemented us on the good appearance of the Maintenance Shop. Auto shop, however, in need of clean-up. 4. Noted improvement in Board Plant, Warehouse, Loading and Paint Plant areas. Specific observations and comments: a. Observed one fork-lift operator carrying a load of six to eight pieces of 14* board at the top of the boom when unnecessary. An unsafe practice. b. Noted that bottom rolls in a R.R. box car being unloaded were not wedged in any way to prevent the possibility of roils moving and injuring an exposed employee. c- Made mention of accumulation of stucco on top of roof above the Board Plant storage bins. ( Nothing here is considered unsafe but it would seem to be an area, in my opinion, to give some housekeeping attention.)
