Auer, Director ` Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics ~xzyo -o m roxmJ "--OipOi TO: Administrative Record File AR-226: PFOS, PFOA, Telomers & Related =* Chemicals On March 5, 2003, OPPTS management met with representatives of 3M, DuPont *>? tr O' (representing the Fluoropolymers Manufacturing Group (FMG)), and Daikin (representing the Telomer Research Program (TRP)) to discuss perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and telomers. The meeting attendees are shown on the attached listing. The meeting had been requested by industry. O pi oO EPA opened up the discussion by asking industry to describe its views on the issues and to outline its voluntary product stewardship efforts. The industry representatives described their views regarding the hazards and risks of PFOA and indicated that they believe there is a lack of evidence of significant risk. In response to a question from EPA regarding the 2-generation reproductive toxicity study, industry toxicologists indicated that they did not have issues with the study, which they believed to be well conducted, however, they did question the blood sampling data collected from the rats which they believed to be quite limited and not taken at the proper times. Industry went on to outline their product stewardship efforts and indicated their commitment to provide EPA with the information needed to conduct a scientific assessment of the hazards, exposures, and risks. DuPont, speaking for the FMG, indicated that they were implementing steps to reduce PFOA emissions from manufacturing and use and that were committed to assessing its presence in the environment around these sites as part of their stewardship efforts. Daikin, speaking for the TRP, indicated their intention to provide EPA with needed information, including information on chemicals, products, and processes, as part of their stewardship. EPA indicated its appreciation for the voluntary efforts and encouraged industry to move quickly to provide EPA with key needed information, including biodegradation data on telomers, identification of sites using PFOA and telomers, and information on relevant chemicals in commerce, including their production and uses.
